To be fair I don't give the guineas that much in the way of lettuce but it's because too much gives them diarrhoea.  Yuk.
I've also heard this before about lettuce being like opium but I can't find any evidence for it outside of Beatrix Potter!

Our sainsbury still has courgettes, up to £1.30 for 3 though.
