Tested out some FRFR/active speakers with a Helix today

All being well one of my basses will be sold on Saturday and then I can Order a powered cab.

Taking into account reviews. weight and where they will live in the house I'm going to go for the DXR10 and give it a good try out.

I can't help but chime in by saying I hated the DXR-10.  Bought a Matrix FR12P (passive) and it's much more to my taste - and shaped like a cab.

What was the difference? Matrix stuff is a bit difficult to try next to other stuff as they sell direct.

Ive narrowed my choice to the powered Matrix (but would probably need to abandon the idea of using it for bass) or the DXR10.

I have to say the Matrix not having a cooling fan is a big draw for me. I hate fan noise and I often play while watching telly and a constant whirring is annoying. But I don't know how loud the fan on the DXR10 is.

@fretmeister genuinely only ever notice the fans when I go to switch the speakers off. I play at moderate bedroom levels most of the time too.

I just find the Matrix sounds more real. The Yamaha, to my ears, sounded harsh and plasticky. But it's clearly subjective​ as the Yamaha is hugely popular. 

Matrix will let you return it if you don't like it. Customer service has been spot on. The guy I spoke to said the timescales published are very flexible if you need more time.

I waited for three months especially for the Matrix speakers and was excited to finally get a more cab like experience. But felt quite let down by them. My opinion may change now, a year later, but I really couldn't be happier with the DXRs.

I have one. The fan produces a very low and soft hum. It isn't unpleasant, and is easily drowned out. You probably won't notice it over the sound of the TV TBH.

How do you set the DSP and HPF on the back?

Flat and 120 usually.

I went flat but didn't use the HPF. 120hz is too much for bass use.

Its a very impressive cab! I reckon I'm less than 5% away from nailing my usual sound from a Darkglass M900 and Barefaced cabs.
