I don't think numbers are that important, they will come if the content is interesting and meets peoples expectations. For me its tech discussions (though I'd like to see more amp construction discussions) and small ads. Keep those changing daily and I'll keep reading and butting in and I guess most people will feel the same. You have done exceptionally well to get enough people in such a short time to make this place feel vibrant and I think there will be a happy medium between this and TGP which is frankly too busy, I can't keep up with it.

  • I think numbers *are* important. New members keep the place alive and we need all types to start and maintain the kind of discussions we are interested in.

Particularly for the "Classifieds" discussions to work we need lots of buyers and sellers, otherwise it can get a bit incestuous with the same gear being passed around a few people.

Thats a bit of a thread ressurection!

Ahhhh ... September 2013. I think I remember those days.  Vaguely.

We’d just launched th forum and our main concern at the time was getting the site established before MR got theirs back up and running.  We’ve moved on from then!

Although we never had a clear strategy for the site, we chased volume because thats what websites did.  Its all abut the volume because that drives the ad revenue.  Except we didn’t - don’t - want advertising!

It took us a while to get to that realisation, but having got there, it changes the way that we’d run the site and means that we’ve come to recognise and value quality over quantity.  Sure, quantity of quality would be great, but we’d chose the latter over the former every day.

You’ve already created a lot of quality, and the current growth in the jam sessions and music challenges (as just 2 examples) will grow that more.  More in the making & modding section.  More businesses engaging with us in a mutually beneficial way (although we’ve got a way to go for that to be possible).  More in the reviews section to build that into a more useful resource than the 4.5/5 star reviews.  More of thngs that make this a cohesive community.

And less of the pointless irrelevant arguing, less of the freeloading ...

And goog luck to guitar chat.  Given the amount of bassists and bass-related content that we seem to have acquired here, it seems only fair that they add a few strings to their bow.

Our competition isn’t another forum - its millions of FB groups or thousands of YT channels, or the new platform that’s just being trialled by a couple of kids in thier bedrooms that Google will shortly buy for $5bn.

And ourselves.  We are our own biggest competition.

What we - all of us - do and how we use the forum will have the biggest impact on whether we’re still here in another 5yrs time and (if we are) what we’ve evolved into.

    Ah that makes sense.
I googled Guitar Chat and come up with some weird blog.

What punishment will be metered out to forumites who join Guitar Chat?
Will it involve genital torture of any kind?

If you're already a member on Basschat, as some of us from here are, you can use the same password to sign on. They're a good bunch.

They used to feature a small guitar section there which they've now pulled over to the new site but the guitar traffic was relatively low but pedal purchases/prices could be good.

As TTony said, this was a bit of a necro bump as the first talk of this was in 2013 and so it's taken 5 years to develop and launch but 'Good Luck' to them but it's a very different model to ours and TTony highlights our strengths and long may we continue and be good to ourselves.

Until GC starts snagging loads of our traffic, we'll just point and snigger a little.

After that, we'll probably change their avatars to Bungle.

How about flyers at various venues in the UK that host local bands and the like? Maybe independent record shops too.

The Basschat moderating stance is a lot more “firm” compared to here - and it’s quite a bit more focused in its attention.

I love basschat, it’s a good source of information, but it doesn’t in any way feel like a community in the way it does here

Granted, it has it's 'own format' but then I don't think you see some of the bollocks that goes on here. Swings and roundabouts but as always, we should feel proud of what we've achieved and continue to achieve here.

You need to get along to one of their BassChat Days (there's one in Surrey in mid-September). You couldn't hope for a more friendly, fun and welcoming bunch and it's a really well-organised day and good place to build on friendships and that community
