For a friend who wants a Gibson 335/345 or 355 would like to trade his 1980 Yamaha SG2000:

1980 Yamaha SG2000. This has a rare factory fitted Kahler tremolo, which was aimed at the American market at the time. The guitar has just had a full fret dress and plays like a dream!

In addition to the above he also believes the pickups to have been changed. He is happy to verify on request if it looks like a deal may be possible.

Cash deal also welcome of course £2000

    Nice guitar - interested to know what the pickups are - they look similar to the ones on my SG3000.

    Thanks guys. @robinbowes He will need to find out and verify the pickups at some point before any deal can go ahead so I will update here when he does. Are your SG3000 pickups original?

    I believe they are, yes.

    When he gets around to taking them out for photos I'll do the same and we can compare. I've also got an '80s SA2000S, so can compare to those too.

    Perfect thanks. Most of the pickups he has seen online on these are black so thats his reason for being uncertain on originality.

    @spark240 ;

    I am pretty new to the forum and maybe this is just banter but is it really necessary to come onto an ad and diss the value of the guitar? Is there a reason you feel so compelled to do that? Kind of childish stuff I would expect on Facebook not here.

    Yes, be interesting to know what those pick-ups are - maybe Duncan's ? Don't look like the Spinex that later came on 3000's ...

    Unusual that the nut is non-locking for the Floyd - Yamaha's own Rockin' Magic which came a little later (with locking nut) was inspired by the Floyd but not really as good.

    Does it (or did it originally) have the push-push tone controls ?

    I will ask him, I know he hasn't changed anything since he had it and I asked him to ensure he confirmed any mods/non original parts before I would list it here. Will see what he says

    Apologies @CMW335. No malice intended. More of an in-joke. :(

    There is a long, long story attached to this.

    Mr. @spark240 and myself are long-term Yamaha SG owners (pretty much since we were kids), so we both have an interest in them. These guitars (and their potential value) have been the subject of much discussion on tFB, primarily due to the exploits of a certain northern dealer (who is renowned for speculative pricing, the express intent of which can only be to drive prices skywards).

    As many people have said, the person concerned may be lovely IRL, but the process of hoovering/flipping at £££% overvalue markup does grate somewhat.

    The pick ups, barring any sort of putting-a-cover-on-the-originals mod, are definitely not original, same goes for the pick up rings.

    I'm pretty sure the tuners are not original also, but might be wrong.

    The TRC should have a Yamaha logo on it, if it's '1980'. Reissue (from 1998)  TRC lack the tuning fork logo.

    Shouldn't it have some sort of different nut for the trem? Sorry, Bigsby's are cutting edge tremolos for me!

    All well intended, the top is gorgeous and I'm sure it sounds great.

    No worries @HarrySeven I got the reference and context I am perhaps just a little oversensitive at the moment to comments which can be seen as detrimental to to an honest sale. I was recently accused of having fake guitars on face book by one of the page admins because I could not produce COA for a 1970 les paul custom or a 1964 Martin... you would think it prudent to do a bit of research before accusing someone of trying to punt fake gear. Anyway that coupled with all the other derogatory crazy remarks on Facebook has got under my skin a little lol.

    I don't know the Yamaha model that well, have seen plenty others on sale around the same mark so didn't think he was being unreasonable... I do know for a fact his outlay was higher than his asking price believe it or not

    yes seems the nut has been changed, he does have a Kahler string lock in the case... doesn't mean much to me tbh probably will to you. I will check in with him re the other points

    £2K+? Wow! :o

    At the end of the day, value is relative/subjective, to some degree...but what you've just said is precisely what we're talking about in the threads above...there more higher (asking) prices show up in Google search results, the more the (perceived) value will rise.

    I’m not sure “ interesting valuation”...classes as dissing the price ?....

    either way...dude these are great guitars, and yes the vaulations have been discussed before, but it’s all down to what a buyer is prepared to,pay .

    Ok @spark240 ;, come on, hand on heart, what did you mean by that comment? Say what you see. Can you honestly say you were not insinuating the asking price is to high?  It’s not my guitar or my sale and even if it was I am totally fine with other people’s opinions on values etc I will own the fact I may be oversensitive to this at the moment for reasons stated above. What I don’t understand is I see many guitars in the classifieds here and elsewhere some of which I think are priced too high or the description is not quite accurate whatever but I never feel compelled to jump in and undermine the ad. I simply conclude I am not interested in that guitar at that price so onto the next post. Like you say it’s all subjective but querying the valuation will deter interest so this thread is effectively derailed regardless of whatever praise you lay on now.

    I didn’t join this forum to make enemies or argue so please take this in the spirit it’s intended i.e think before you post.

    The Kahler trem was introduced at NAMM in 1982 so unlikely to be a factory fit if this is a 1980 guitar. Those certainly weren't the original pickups, pickup rings, nut or tuners, and there wouldn't have been a ring under the pickup selector. None of those changes would enhance the value of an original from 1980, the opposite in fact. Yamahas are great guitars, I used to have 2 SG2000s years ago and still have an SG1000.

    Actually, yeah, that's true. In the excitement of seeing a nice old SG, I'd forgotten the year when it all kicked off, Kahler-wise. https://www.kahlerusa.com/about/

    @CMW335
    - does your friend know anything about the history of the guitar before he acquired it? Any pics of the rear of the headstock? Also, has he ever removed the Kahler when restringing? If so, what's the routing like?
