Talk me out of getting a Danelectro...

What's Hot

Played an older Korean one today in a local shop and it was so much fun and so easy to play.

Do I need one? No. Is it going to sound better than my other guitars? No. But it played so well. Yes, it rattled and plinked a bit but...

Also if I did buy one I would toy with the idea of modding it - maybe adding a P90 :D

I had one, a Korean u2 reissue, finally managed to flog it on recently (it took a long time!). I'm not sure how easy it would be to change pickups due to the construction of it, it feels like hollow MDF which could be tricky I'd have thought re routing for pickups.

Also the pickups run in series, which I guess could be useful but didn't really suit me as it buggered up the volume levels when switching around.

It was also quite noisy in my house, but that's not all that unusual as it happens with all pickup types.

Volume pots were dry and would cut the noise out when turning until I cleaned them and lubricated them.

Looked nice although it was cream and brown, so didn't really match my usual colour schemes but would suit somebody in brown chords and a large hat maybe.

Other people seem to like them more than me to be fair though so I'd say take my experience with a pinch of pepper

It will be fun for a while then the novelty will wear off. Do not buy it.

Playing a Danelectro will heighten your risk of finger cancer.
Your partner will cheat on you with a Danelectro.
If you buy a Danelectro, every puppy in the world will be sad.

    Need more?

They sound great, and they look great too.

The hardware does have a few foibles though. Not sure a pickup swap would be very easy (or very necessary to be honest - the sound is part of the charm)

    I'm a serial Danelectro buyer.

I buy one, the novelty wears off, I sell, I miss it, I buy another. And so it goes...

They are awesome. Probably the most fun you can have in a Far Eastern-made instrument. Buy one!

    The 12 string DC59 is a fun guitar. Everyone needs a 12 string. ;)

Built out of the packing cases the parts arrived in.
Sound interesting but I’ve never found a use for one.

Everyone should have a cheap, fun and not very practical guitar.
If you can, then life is too hard and too short not to.

I saw Paul McCartney a couple of weeks ago and one of his two guitarists used a black 59 Danelectro throughout. It sounded absolutely fantastic. And looked cool as hell.
    I want one too.
