For me that has to be Neil Young.

Ian

Lowering my expectations has succeeded beyond my wildest dreams.

You, of all people, should know that.

Obviously a hard factor to measure - Is it based on popularity, number of records sold, a personal opinion - Many many great song writers, starting off with the American Song book guys like Berlin, Mercer, Porter, etc - Off course you need too bring into play John and Paul - Don't forget Carole King, Paul Anka, Neil Sedaka, Neil Diamond - Bob Dylan can sit amongst the best of any list of song writers, Benny and Bjorn - Hard to knock what Buddy Holly delivered in such a short period of time - Leiber and Stoller - Brian and Eddie Holland and Lamont Dozie

But Burt Bacharach, in collaboration with Hal, for so many great tunes over such a period are my #1

Simon and garfunkle are very good, Donovan in my view was brilliant, on a less personal level anyone who made the charts with a song.

It's hard to look past the Beatles really.

They all had great solo careers too, Lennon wrote Imagine, Harrison wrote While My Guitar Gently Weeps, McCartney came out with Wings and Live & Let Die, Ringo with Thomas The Tank Engine.

Dylan, Lennon and McCartney, Neil Young, Neil Finn, Bruce Springsteen, Paul Simon, Don Henley, Burt Bacharach, Bryan Ferry…

That’s just ten who should probably be in there.

When Paul McCartney was asked “what’s it like being the best songwriter in the world?” He replied “Dunno, ask Neil Finn”.

It’s probably Carole King if you look at it objectively.

It’s probably Carole King if you look at it objectively.
If you look at it objectively it’s McCartney, by more than one different statistical measure… but objectivity shouldn’t really apply.

If you go by an objective definition like number of sales, Max Martin is one of the best. I doubt anyone here would agree.
