Is this down to you not being able to afford one, with the subsequent worry about your standing in society?
I got it because I wanted it, no other reason.
I haven't really thought about what it's saying about me to the wider world, but if people that don't know me are shallow enough to judge me on my number plate then I would suggest maybe they find a hobby or something.

People who think it's shallow to have vanity plates are shallow for thinking that.
It is actually.
They are a statement, otherwise why would people spend hundreds, if not thousands on them? Something that is highly conspicuous too. Its not like a watch or even a fancy pair of shoes. A private plate is right out there, a badge.
You dont have to explain it to anyone, of course. But, a private plate is by its very nature elitist. I dont think you can escape that. I'd be happy to be proved wrong though, and I am honestly not having a pop, I'm genuinely interested, cos I really don't like them!
I pulled up only yesterday, next to a chap in his Jag with the plate 1 AM NOB, and honestly, I couldn't look up for the shame and inadequacy.
It all says something to the onlooker...although what its says may be perceived differently.
Why do we all want different things,...or as Radio 2 says....What makes us Human ;-)

Well unlike you I do like them, not stupid ones that spell 1 AM NOB or M1 NGE or T1 TTY - just my initials that's all. Totally inoffensive. I just drive a little 2 seater roadster, but when I pull up next to a £400,000 Rolls Royce or Bentley I think I drop down quite a bit in the elitist stakes. I'm not trying to be elitist, it's just someone else's perception.
I'm comfortable with my private plate.
Mine is my first initial, then a number 8, then 3 letters. The 8 and the three letters spell my surname in full.
It's spaced legally, in the correct font and with no dot or any of that wank. Personally I don't really care what other people think. It's a little bit of cash spent once many years ago that will at the very least hold its value. It also stops the whole "New car every other year" neighbour snobbery.

Just because you're paranoid, don't mean they're not after youI’d be happy to put that plate on my car! Or the one that spells Tosser!
The difference being that the I phone albeit overpriced, does have a practical use.
God knows what that says about me!
