Can we get some sort of anti-misogyny policy on this forum please? Can a moderator please DM me. I've seen this sort of shit every day since returning here and I'd like to be a part of this community but this is putting me off. If there's no intention to weed out this crap then I won't return.
@Jack_ ;comment isn't mysoginistic in any sense of the definition. Your language offends me so please tone it down before I contact the mods about your swearing on a public forum.

when i was younger (omg am i actually saying that already! i'm only 36!!) i used to use girls shoe logic to justify buying gear. so the trick is you don't think about the actual price in terms of a lump sum you are putting on the counter, but you divide the price between how many times you expect to use it while you have it.
Not all girls are interested in buying shoes, stop being so misogynistic.
    I take it you're single.
Actually the beauty of the comment is the misogyny in assuming @vale is male as this is a guitar forum.

And referring to females as girls..
    haha, i see....

well when i used to waste far too much time thinking about shoes & playing number games with my tiny pt earnings i kinda was a 'girl', though i'm sure i thought myself fully the swishy lady about town (& probs would have been mortally offended by someone calling me a 'girl', so appreciate @Jack_ 's point).

but now i use boys/girls in an arch affectionate sense (now, now, boys/girls, play nice!).
blunt men/women in arguments usually (grrr bloody men! silly woman!).
& familiar guys & bitches in off-duty & at home situations ('make me a coffee, bitch!).

language is a feast, eat up!

ps. i still use the 'shoe logic' this trick on myself & i still think there's relevance in it as a value concept.
The shoe logic thing is sound!
I use guitars as a guide, as in how much? I could buy 3 perfectly good guitars for that! My wife has also, always told me, you can't have too many pairs of shoes, or black trousers!

    Its all good fun, innit!?
so if you fancy a reissue of a guitar they never made in a colour they never used then it probably isn't too overpriced.

I'll continue to call it out when I see it. I'd like this place to be open to all, including young girls and women who are interested in playing guitar. No one should come here and be put off by demeaning comments and behaviour. That's not too much to ask. Thanks.
The fact that this comment has (so far) got 10 wisdoms does tell me that a lot of people agree with @1970 on a lot of this - including me.

As the father of 2 young girls who seem interested in music, I wouldn't want them on here in a few years time.

As it stands now, I'll be having a conversation something along the lines of:

"Why can't I go on that forum you go on to talk about guitars?"

"Because it's full of appalling language, and sexual comments, and bad attitudes towards women"

"So, why do you go on there then?"

    "Ummm........"

I'm not going to do it while I'm at work but if I searched the forum for "Youporn" I reckon I'd get hundreds of mentions of it returned.

There's no need for a lot of the stuff that we have on here on a guitar forum.  I know some people like it, and there is a convention that the worst stuff is kept in SC but I'd definitely be happier with a slightly different tone on the forum and I'm a 47 year old white male - not a snowflake 21 year student.

The other thing to remember is that a lot of us log in from work.  I'm surprised that the net nannies here haven't actually blocked some threads.  They block some TGP content and that's far more sanitised than it is here.  I suspect that this site is currently small enough that it falls under the radar of the some of the algorithms that classify web pages.  Cleaning it up a bit might be wise to stop it getting blocked at some point in the future.

@crunchman If you click on a username you can ignore that user which stops you seeing their comments, well they are hidden until you click on them.

I haven't seen the content you are talking about (not saying it isn't there), the comment on this particular thread is not in my opinion one to be offended by.

Back on topic, I love relic'd guitars and naturally aged guitars. New and shiny doesn't do it for me for some reason. I can't say the same thing for shoes or cars though!

    this thread is wandering into the wilderness of semantics a bit. but significance & connotation are determined by context. in laymans' terms;

i'm 36, female, asd (among many other glorious things).

if another person with asd calls me spacker or snowflake it's funny & intimate.
i'm my employer calls me spacker or snowflake it's a tribunal.

same thing kind of happens with 'girls' (& in home/social situation 'bitch').

i also have black friends who use the 'n' word among themselves. it's pretty common. but not for me to address them so.

the 'intention to offend' is the key, not the word itself. often the context makes this clear, other times far less so. we have to be careful, when we read something which is ambiguous, in too readily assuming it was said with the intention to be offensive.

challenge problematic words if & when they trouble us. but be careful not to assume we 'know' that the other intended it to offend, unless the context leaves little room for reasonable doubt.

It's not so much whether someone prefers relics, natuarally aged or new. Each to their own and all that.

My original post was more about the fact that if a guitar is supposed to be relic'd then dings and scratches don't devalúe it, whereas they would on a vintage guitar. Why do people want vintage guitars to be mint? Is it just because they are rare? There seems to be no logic to it.

Lets ban all fun and humour from the forum because someone wants to log in from work.

    Good idea.

I'd estimate that 50% of the content of the forum is from people who are at work.  I post more at work when I'm taking a 5 minute break from thinking than I do at home in evenings when I can actually play my guitar, or spend time with my wife and daughters.

Regarding what @photek said about hiding content from some users, that won't help if the whole thread gets blocked by the net nannies in the workplace.  Like I said above, there is stuff on TGP I've been blocked from and that is far more sanitised than here.  Sooner or later I'm certain that stuff here will get blocked.  If that's in SC then fine, but outside of SC then content ought to SFW - or at least not so outrageous that you can't make a case for it with the HR department.

What is this stuff outside of SC that's so outrageous your HR dept might ban it?

Because I'm 100% certain throwaway insincere comments like Jack's aren't going to get the site shut down.

I think organisation's internet access policies are generally intended to ensure that staff don't access sites that are deemed "inappropriate" by the standards of that organisation from equipment provided by that organisation in time paid for by that organisation.

It's not to ensure that "inappropriate" content is removed from the internet.

And one organisation's definition of "inappropriate" isn't the same as another organisation's definition.

There's far worse misandry on mumsnet than there is misogyny on here.

To be honest this thread isn't the kind of stuff that is likely to cause problems.  It was more of a general comment I was making.  There have been some threads I've opened and very quickly hit the back button.

It's not just work though.  It's the fact that there is stuff on here I wouldn't want my daughter looking over my shoulder now she can read.

I doubt that @1970's original comments were purely inspired by this thread either.

You didn't need to get offended, a few men decided to get offended for all women.

I find it offensive that men can decide something would be offensive to women, like a female couldn't possibly have a sense of humour and take the comment in the way it was quite obviously intended.

I'm pretty sure had a female member made a "it's the same way I treat men" comment no one would have given it a second thought.

Equality means giving everyone the chance to prove they hold a sense of humour, a fair use of common sense and the ability to speak for themselves if something did offend them.
