I use guitars as a guide, as in how much? I could buy 3 perfectly good guitars for that! My wife has also, always told me, you can't have too many pairs of shoes, or black trousers!
Its all good fun, innit!?
As the father of 2 young girls who seem interested in music, I wouldn't want them on here in a few years time.
As it stands now, I'll be having a conversation something along the lines of:
"Why can't I go on that forum you go on to talk about guitars?"
"Because it's full of appalling language, and sexual comments, and bad attitudes towards women"
"So, why do you go on there then?"
"Ummm........"
I'm not going to do it while I'm at work but if I searched the forum for "Youporn" I reckon I'd get hundreds of mentions of it returned.
There's no need for a lot of the stuff that we have on here on a guitar forum. I know some people like it, and there is a convention that the worst stuff is kept in SC but I'd definitely be happier with a slightly different tone on the forum and I'm a 47 year old white male - not a snowflake 21 year student.
The other thing to remember is that a lot of us log in from work. I'm surprised that the net nannies here haven't actually blocked some threads. They block some TGP content and that's far more sanitised than it is here. I suspect that this site is currently small enough that it falls under the radar of the some of the algorithms that classify web pages. Cleaning it up a bit might be wise to stop it getting blocked at some point in the future.
I haven't seen the content you are talking about (not saying it isn't there), the comment on this particular thread is not in my opinion one to be offended by.
Back on topic, I love relic'd guitars and naturally aged guitars. New and shiny doesn't do it for me for some reason. I can't say the same thing for shoes or cars though!
i'm 36, female, asd (among many other glorious things).
if another person with asd calls me spacker or snowflake it's funny & intimate.
i'm my employer calls me spacker or snowflake it's a tribunal.
same thing kind of happens with 'girls' (& in home/social situation 'bitch').
i also have black friends who use the 'n' word among themselves. it's pretty common. but not for me to address them so.
the 'intention to offend' is the key, not the word itself. often the context makes this clear, other times far less so. we have to be careful, when we read something which is ambiguous, in too readily assuming it was said with the intention to be offensive.
challenge problematic words if & when they trouble us. but be careful not to assume we 'know' that the other intended it to offend, unless the context leaves little room for reasonable doubt.
my extended lunch hour over. back to the farm.
My original post was more about the fact that if a guitar is supposed to be relic'd then dings and scratches don't devalúe it, whereas they would on a vintage guitar. Why do people want vintage guitars to be mint? Is it just because they are rare? There seems to be no logic to it.
Good idea.
i think we do ok here. i'm pretty thick skinned but no real idiots i'm aware of.

Regarding what @photek said about hiding content from some users, that won't help if the whole thread gets blocked by the net nannies in the workplace. Like I said above, there is stuff on TGP I've been blocked from and that is far more sanitised than here. Sooner or later I'm certain that stuff here will get blocked. If that's in SC then fine, but outside of SC then content ought to SFW - or at least not so outrageous that you can't make a case for it with the HR department.
Well you shouldn't!
Now get back to work.
Because I'm 100% certain throwaway insincere comments like Jack's aren't going to get the site shut down.
It's not to ensure that "inappropriate" content is removed from the internet.
And one organisation's definition of "inappropriate" isn't the same as another organisation's definition.
There's far worse misandry on mumsnet than there is misogyny on here.
It's not just work though. It's the fact that there is stuff on here I wouldn't want my daughter looking over my shoulder now she can read.
I doubt that @1970's original comments were purely inspired by this thread either.
You didn't need to get offended, a few men decided to get offended for all women.
I find it offensive that men can decide something would be offensive to women, like a female couldn't possibly have a sense of humour and take the comment in the way it was quite obviously intended.
I'm pretty sure had a female member made a "it's the same way I treat men" comment no one would have given it a second thought.
Equality means giving everyone the chance to prove they hold a sense of humour, a fair use of common sense and the ability to speak for themselves if something did offend them.
