When you take away all the cute blubbery flippery stuff they're quite a scary-looking predator, with big sharp teeth and what appear to be long claws - which are hidden inside the flipper when it's alive.

I did an anatomy exam where we had to identify animals by their skull. I think only a couple of us worked out the seal. It looks like a cross between a dog and a bear! 
I only knew it as I grew up in a seaside town & had to pull my dog away from a few seal corpses each year- if they roll in it the smell lingers for days!
