I include myself in that - although I'm just under forty so maybe not quite middle aged yet?
I was a member on the old intermusic forum but didn't post that often and used it probably more for the classifieds and guitar section. However, the back end of music radar and this place coincided with fatherhood for me.
That's a massive moment for some people as your previous life goes on the back burner a bit. Nights out get less frequent, and when you do go out you can't role in at 3am and sleep it off the next day - because there's a kid jumping on your bed at 5am!
But with iPhone in hand you can come here still have a laugh, read about gear and although I'm not in a band anymore - I genuinely enjoy reading about others that are. The music forum has some decent links to new music, speakers corner allows us to be a bit silly and probably say the things we can't at home and work etc.
The classifieds are great but I'm imposing my own ban on buying and I've never had great success selling here. The U.K. builders section is brilliant - I've spent loads of time just reading threads and have ended up with a few items myself.
The beauty of OT for me is I can post a non guitar related discussion - perhaps a question about something. Now I could go to a gardening forum/motor forum etc and do the same. However, I value the opinions of a lot of people on here and their real world experience. In a lot of circumstances I'd be happier getting information and knowledge from here than elsewhere.
So for me, no - it's not a guitar forum. It's my forum of choice where I enjoy spending my time and value (on the whole) the membership.
Stands to reason it is so huge really.

Again, not unlike @octatonic
Octatonic has a better beard though.

Remind me, when was the last time you posted anything about guitars.....

Why are you only comparing guitar chat with off topic?
Talking about gear and playing had 38k posts and selling gear has 39k posts. Off topic at 15.5k seems like a reasonable proportion when it is meant to be a community as well as a nerdfest.
I'm pretty sure if you did the metrics my guitar, amps, effects, performance, and songwriting threads would vastly outweigh my off topic and speakers corner posts.
Now what have you done apart from endlessly ignore people when they correct you on scientific principles and audio compression?

You'll dick about with the odd bit of guitar gear here and there. But the wife doesn't like it, and you'll kowtow to her demands and only sneak the cheapo Squier out of it's case every few weeks. You'll keep it all though, all that kit. No sense in selling everything and admitting to yourself the great failures of life.
So then you jump on a forum, so you can at least feel somewhat connected to music. You'll get sucked into the chatty areas though, and you'll start endless threads about peachy butts, quotes of the day, football and F1 racing, favourite animals, bad TV that you can't seem to ignore, and a whole cornocopia of lifeless and dull pursuits that go hand in hand with your thorough rejection of your true self.
Until one day regret pours over you like the scorn you have to live with. Only then will you be old and wise. Only then.
