I'm with you - strike, withdraw your labour, make a point.  Use it as a tool to fight whatever the fight is.

Strinking on key dates with the intention of causing as much disruption as humanly possible like this just looks cynical, and could be interpreted as a punishment.  I think it actually weakens the case.
Definitely a double edged sword. It’s causes major hassle to their employers, which I guess is their intention. It also majorly pisses off the public and doesn’t promote any sympathy for their cause.
You could argue that there is little sympathy for their cause because, in most industries, unions are extremely weak and for most people this is an affront, not a basic right. The fight was lost a long time ago for most. It'll be interesting to see how much the strikers are demonised in the media.
It’s also cost more people their jobs and small businesses than the number of guards they are trying to save. RMT will happily fuck over 10,000 people to save a guard or two.

Actually I think the biggest losers will be the drivers and guards... between the rildiculous wages they earn for not-steering or being surly all day and the near continuous stikes for years they must be fast approaching the rubicon - where the forcast cost of keeping staff becomes higher than mechanising and going driverless.

Some drivers are on over £50k for something a computer can do better and more reliably (the DLR is driverless and you never have a dozen cancelled trains due to a driver not showing up)... were I in there position I'd be doing everything I could to keep my head down and not look so replacable rather than trying to upset my employers in an argument that was lost over a year ago

Driverless train technology was available for the Victoria Line when it opened in 1968. The unions refused to countenance that, so the person in the driving cab has sat there for nigh on fifty years opening and closing the doors.

With 8 and 12 carriage trains it’s not safe only having a driver and no other staff around when people are alighting or boarding.

So you either need fully staffed stations with a platform guard that signals the driver that it is safe to depart , or you need a guard in the train.

Or you need technology to prevent the train from moving if someone is stuck or falls.

It's a little bit like taking over time away from hard working people to play cat and mouse with public opinion by the Labour Party to make the government look bad, or something, I forget.
ASLEF/RMT - They're all things Jeremy Corybyn likes to throw out of his not being the PM pram, only when he causes a stir, the UK public suffer.
In effect causing chaos because he lost worse in an election where no one won, it's b/s, especially on these dates.
Should be getting something for working on these days, but now to make a strop, people won't be working this year.

Or.... I could just buy a car (and you know, pass my theory test then practical and get my license and worry about parking).

I hate to say it, but, Southern Rail have a monopoly on my station.
I even told that to my useless MP's secretary last summer and I actually got a letter back from him/my MP (Steve Reed MP Labour) blaming Southern Rail.

Yep - Many family members look forward to reuniting for Christmas and because of this, it does not make me sympathetic towards the cause.

Plus...Railway salaries are normally above average.

  • RMT. They seem obsessed at sticking it to an imaginary enemy.
I think they are absolute fuckwits

  • The whole "we need guards to open and close doors is complete crap. German trains have had end of platform screens as well as in cab screens for years with no need for guards.
Even worse than RMT  are the TFL unions. You can't even get a job as a guard or driver unless you are related or know somebody in the union. And they will go on strike because a worker was sacked for being pissed on the job.

Well, whether or not they are above average is neither here nor there.

This kind of nonsense just gives fuel to the fire of the anti socialist opinion givers. When the teacher / junior doctor strikes were on there was overwhelming public support and most people understood the reasons for it. I can't see public support anywhere for this, in fact all it does is give an easy pr win the right.

Yes, but Germany has less fuckwits using their trains and better rail infrastructure.

  • I'd love to be moaning about the trains being on strike. Why aren't I then?
Because the nearest station is 8 fucking miles away and you have to either drive there (sort of defeats the point) or take a 35min bus there and 35mins back.
It's not like I live in the middle of nowhere either
    Nobody is guaranteed tomorrow.....

Hopefully driverless train technology is just around the corner and they will all be unemployed as soon as possible. These Union cunts have a lot to answer for all supported by the Labour Party.
Lots of you are still backing this Corbyn clown and his Union cronies. Socialist crap.

Where is that so called London Mayor when you need him to sort this out? Probably sat having a curry in Tooting at the expense of the Unions.

Told you. Although let's not point out that all the strikes have happened under Tory rule, we wouldn't want to blow a hole in the argument eh? ;)

Please tell me how giving the Unions more power and abandoning trade union legislation via a Corbyn vote is a good idea?

Unions just strike as soon as the wind changes. Most people would lose their job if they walked out and didn’t perform their duties as required.

Corbyn is a union puppet and will drag us back to the dark ages of disorder and conflict. They talk about raising wages for the average man in the street. Have you seen how much the average railway worker earns and their list of endless benefits ? Yet they still walk out on strike!

The strikes will cause misery for many and benefit the few.

  • I don't like the rail unions, I don't support their seemingly endless strike balloting.

Just because one union is corrupt and selfish doesn't make all of them so... I refer you to my earlier comment which you obviously couldn't be bothered to read. (See junior doctors vs clueless government git and teachers who know how children work vs clueless government git).
