@RaymondLin how do you colour your images? I've seen some youtube tutorials suggest using LUTs to get that look, but I'm sure that's not the only way!

Lightroom, sometimes I see a photo I like online and try to recreate it myself, of course it would be only a guess my me but I like that since I am not copying and I am just doing it my way as there are many ways to edit something to get a similar look.  This was one of those instances, I had this preset i made last year or earlier I've never used that i saved it.

I can't exactly remember off my head what I did here but I can tell you it's probably some white balance, tone curve adjustments.

Thanks. I've not really explored the tone curves. Will have to look into them.

You can drag any point on the line to make it into a curve.  Think of left side is 100% black and right side is 100% white.  Move the left up will move the minimum black level in the photo up so any true blacks becomes more grey.

That's part of that look to add to the "mist" and smoke feel in the photo.  It's very subtle.

A little advice needed from the lens gurus please! I need to raise some quick cash and have sadly decided to sell my Sigma 105mm Macro f/2.8 EX DG OS HSM lens. It is in its protective case and boxed unused from new, it has never been on a camera. They retail at £339 new and I would like some advice on what the minimum I should accept for it should be and where the best place is to advertise it please? I really don’t want to go the Ebay route.
Thank you for any advice you can give.

I'd be interested in November but that's probably not much use to you...
@ThePrettyDamned well plans have changed and new ideas are forming so it’ll probably still be here in November. Let me know nearer the time when and if you’re still interested and we can come to a deal.
Tomorrow will be a good day.

Quite a lot of members have had guitar related Christmas pressies but has anyone had any photographic gear?

I treated myself to an upgrade of Capture 1 Fujifilm v20 to C1 Pro v21 so I can now work on all my legacy Pentax RAW images in addition to Fujifilm RAFs. That means the move from Lightroom to C1 is now complete.

Also my lovely lady bought me a Plustek OpticFilm 8100 film scanner so I can now start scanning many of my old 35mm slides and filmstrips. A daunting task but in these current months of short days and Tier 4 Covid restrictions it's an ideal time to get it done.

Did you get any photo gear?

  • No photo stuff this Christmas. I bought a used Fuji XT3 a few months ago so I'm pretty stocked up with cameras and lenses.

Am looking to buy Affinity Photo is there's an end of year sale. Already have it on Windows but as Serif is tight arsed it's not a cross platform license and would like a copy for my new M1 MacBook.

  • No photo kits for me as I bought a Fujinon 100-400 in Sept... I definitely don’t feel the need for any more kit, but I’d love to travel a more to get more opportunities to use it

I didn’t get any camera gifts for Christmas but, as I’ve decided to focus on landscape photography, I am thinking of treating myself to a wide angle lens for my Olympus OM-10. I also need an appropriate tripod. Any budget recommendations?

A couple of years ago I picked up one of these Carbon tripods. Not actually this brand, but clearly the same tripod from the same factory. There are a few choices on Amazon, I think I paid around £80-90 for mine. I am a landscape shooter but after many years of trying to use a tripod, feeling I should us a tripod, but realising I hated using one even for landscape - I stopped - was gratifying to see James Popsys channel on YT where he's one of the few landscape shooters that hates using tripods too. That said this tripod has had loads of use over lockdown as I've been using it for work video shooting. Very pleased with it. Obviously you can go more expensive than this - but this obvious copy of more expensive ones may actually come from the same Chinese factory anyway.

    Compact Travel Tripod via Amazon.

What I like about this tripod is how small it folds. It's really light too. So you really don't notice carrying it around all day. There's also the option to use one leg as a monopod.

  • I got some Permajet Fibre Base paper, which is really exciting. I really rate their matt plus 240gsm and now I have a fibre gloss (which is more mid-gloss than full on gloss) and the museum heritage, which feels fantastic.

Anyone else full of the love for fisheyes?
I used to use tele and ultra tele for work but now fisheye and wide are my preferred option.

    Lovely photos.

Ultra wide and Fisheye can look great, but you need very strong compositions. They're popular because people like you make them look easy to use :) but I prefer 28mm - 300mm mostly as it makes composition easier for me. Simply put, I don't think I am good enough to use them well.

    Raw photos often do.

One of the reasons I like the canon 6D so much is the raw photos actually already look pretty good. When I had a fuji, the raws were pretty rough so I shot jpegs more often than not, as they had some quite nifty in-camera software including curves adjustment and colour tweaking.

    Composition is everything!

And kudos to @Brio for posting them.  Post processing is as much a part of the artistry now as the actual snapping.  I often take deliberately “rubbish” shots because I know what I can pull out in post.  ie under exposing to maintain stillness or a low iso
