If you want to accelerate the healing follow my tips :-)

    1. Full fat milk
    2. ONLY EAT Salmon and spincah with pine nuts and  until you're out, with lashing of full fat greek yoghurt and banana for afters.
    3. Get Wellman hair and nail tablets

I religiously used the above plan when I smashed my arm- the hosp predicted 16 weeks in plaster, I got out in 9.

The info is from Matt Lovell (Eng Rugby Doctor and Specialist nutritionalist- google him)
    Interesting!

Sadly I can't eat salmon - at least not farmed - I'm allergic to whatever chemical makes it pink.

Replace with Tuna or Sardines then. Both have heaps of calcium.

In that case maybe replace the salmon with fish fingers and a glass of strawberry Nesquik?

  • I didn't know they put chemicals into farmed salmon to make it pink :o

Sorry to hear that mate.... speedy recovery...:)

PS - did the gaffa tape/WD40 approach not work ?

Away for a day and I missed this post! Sorry to hear of your misfortune John. Take your unplanned leisure time to listen to lots of music, brush up on music theory and get some books read. Like @Wazmeister, I wondered if the gaffa tape, vide grips and WD40 solutions actually work? Be strong, you are among friends here :)

There’s nowhere to write. It’s not a plain cast - the outer layer is bandage, over the plaster. I’ve also found that it isn’t quite a complete tube, it only goes about 3/4 of the way round - there’s a gap up the inside of my forearm. I don’t know if that’s because they’re expecting to take it off again on Wednesday or that’s just how they do them now - I’ve never had one before!
I had a cast like that too when I broke my arm.  The gap in the plaster allows for any swelling that may happen initially.  Trust me, a cast that too tight due to swelling is extremely painful. I was put in a normal cast after the first week or two, cannot remember exactly how long now!
Good luck and hope you heal quickly.

The Nesquik is for dipping, right?

This is known as a Backslab. It allows for swelling to occur, and, at the same time provides support / some degree of pain relief for your arm, and, importantly for this stage following injury, restricts your ability to move the elbow. You'll have damaged the tissues making up the joint lining and ligaments around the elbow, and these need to start sticking down and healing before you start to move it. Your surgeon may put you in a Hinged Brace as the next stage ( plaster cylinders around your arm above and below the elbow, which are connected together by lockable hinges either side, or a prefabricated version of this brace) - the hinges can be adjusted to allow a range of movement, which can be increased over time. It depends to an extent on how unstable your surgeon feels your elbow is after this injury.

  • Wishing you a speedy and full recovery ICBM. I hyperextended the elbow joint of my fretting hand around 4 months ago and can't yet hold a guitar let alone play it. Keep us posted.

Well, it's not good news. Saw the elbow specialist today and had more x-rays taken. It's more badly damaged than they initially thought - two fractures as well as a lot of ligament damage. I'm going to need surgery and some metal parts fitted.

The slightly better less bad bit is that I should regain the use of it sooner than they initially said, and it probably won't need to be in a full cast. Full recovery isn't guaranteed though.

    Op day is tomorrow...
