Well, it's not good news. Saw the elbow specialist today and had more x-rays taken. It's more badly damaged than they initially thought - two fractures as well as a lot of ligament damage. I'm going to need surgery and some metal parts fitted.

The slightly better less bad bit is that I should regain the use of it sooner than they initially said, and it probably won't need to be in a full cast. Full recovery isn't guaranteed though.

    Op day is tomorrow...

Hope all goes well. I presume they will be fitting a volute. ;-)

Back home. The NHS is clearly getting good at fairly major surgery on a day-patient basis - in and out including full general anaesthetic in 7 hours. I've had what's called a radial head arthroplasty, which basically means the end of the radius has been replaced with a metal piece, and a coronoid fixation which is to repair a bit that chipped off the ulna. Apart from having very little sensation in my arm at the moment - which I'm assured is normal and will recover - it appears to have worked well and I can actually move it a bit - no cast now, just a binding and a sling.

When I was about 8 or 9 I used to watch the Six Million Dollar Man, and I wanted to be Steve Austin... this is the budget version ;). I told a friend of mine that and she said "be careful what you wish for" :).

Great to hear that you are over the OP and home again.  Take it easy and do the exercises prescribed.  It goes without saying that I wish you a pain free recovery @ICBM but I said it anyway.  In my experience the days can seem long but the weeks fly by.  Take care....

    Not that bad actually!

    ;)

This was this morning... just before the staples got taken out.

It will leave quite a scar I think - luckily I don't look at the back of my elbow a lot :).

They're satisfied with progress so far - I don't have a huge amount of movement in my wrist, and it's pretty painful if I go beyond where it wants to move freely, but apparently I just have to keep working at it. No official physio needed - just a list of suggestions for the right exercises and to basically use it as much as I can stand.

I actually have full freedom of movement in my fingers and a fair bit of strength - I can hold things, if I bring the thing to the hand and not the other way round. I definitely can't play guitar yet, but bass is looking more hopeful - it's forming chord shapes that's the real killer at the moment. But not bad at all considering it's only 11 days since the operation.

That's a very neat job. I had 35+ staples in my head a few years ago. Fair warning...it can sting when they take them out.

It did a bit, but the nurse kept me talking which distracted me enough. Only a couple of them were really nippy - not actually as bad as I expected.

Best wishes @ICBM - hope it is resolved quickly

Jesus - just saw your pic. Can you unzip your forearm and take it off now ;-)

Sounds like you are making very good progress if you are nearly able to pick up a bass again already.

Yep - that’s not going to change just because he’s had an injury surely?

True, but I was thinking of the predictably jolly topic of self-pollution
