The delay was waiting for them to reach Gibson Europe. They reached the European warehouse and are currently on their way to Peach. Not going to be with customers pre Christmas. Should be with Peach middle of next week.

Got this vintage DiMarzio set put in mine now.  The stock neck pup wasn't strong enough to pair with the high output bridge pickup I had.  These are a 70s set with a sub-13k Super Distortion bridge and 7.5ish alnico 5 PAF style in the neck.  I had @TheGuitarWeasel pot them for me :-) not a 100% colour match but nothing anyone will see under stage lights.  The originals are stored safely away

Just given them a good workout, the bridge pup has a good amount of bite to it, more than other SDs I've tried, and the neck matches really well in terms of treble output. The tone control tames it off nicely. Really, really digging these!

That's not true. I don't know whether the very early R8s had smaller frets, but for the past 15 years or so they've had all the same medium-jumbo wire used on the R9s. It was only in 2018 that this changed and the R8s got the vintage-size wire.

Of course following the other advice on here I'd be wanting to pick the guitar "in person" to check it out but if they are all more like vintage/medium frets, I know not to bother and to look for another option.

As noted above, avoid the 2018 R8s and you'll be fine.
