While obviously a great saving, I can't get excited about the 2017 R9s when you know that the only difference to the 2017 R8s is a fancier piece of maple - they are otherwise identical.

I know that's always been the case, except there were the neck profile differences too, but the 40% (!!!) mark up over the R8s is mental!
When did the neck profiles become the same? My 2013 R8 was advertised as a 58 profile. I did notice in gg the other day that some of their R9s had even chunkier necks.

  • Question - has anyone had any joy approaching "other" dealers carrying 2017 stock (ie: those who are not part of this warehouse blow-out arrangement) and pitch for a "price match" (or, more realistically, a (hefty) discount) on a 58 LP?

I guess those dealers must be feeling pretty sore from a hefty kick in the pips . . .

From the guitars I’ve played from this 2017 batch I think the “59 profile” is just sales speak. The neck profiles on the ones I played (both R8s and R9s) have varied as much as they ever have, even before they advertised them as 59 necks. The only thing that does seem to be consistent is the lack of shoulder on the profile. None of the ones I played had D shaped profiles - they were all C profiles. This is most welcome from my perspective as I hate the ones with big shoulders. In terms of chunkiness though there generally seems to be little difference between these 59 neck profiles and the pre-2017 historics.

The resale will be better on the R9.

The R9 is £1000 more, but looking on Reverb, second hand asking prices for R9s look to be slightly over £1000 more than an R8.  There is a range on both R8s and R9s, and asking prices aren't the same as selling prices, but if you have the money, then you won't lose anything long term by buying the R9 rather than an R8.  You might even come out of it a little better off if you end up selling.

I know that you don't go into it intending to sell, but I've had a lot of expensive guitars that I never intended to sell that are now gone.

I agree with the 40% markup for the marginally better maple and potentially lighter guitar being way too much. If all r8s were plain and heavier that’d make sense but we’ve seen the last few years they’ve blurred that quite a lot. Even on the blowout deals thereve been plenty of light, figured tops on the r8s. I’d definitely have bought an r9 at 2.8, maybe 3k but not 3.5. Just a stretch too far for me personally that I cannot justify when I can get a subtly figured, light r8 and keep a grand in my pocket.

@jonathanthonas83, there is some trickery going on in that particular photo also my avatar. I put a selection in the imgur gallery in the link. It’s definitely cherry rather than darkburst but the subtle tight flame is all there. This is without any filter:

Today's the day for me. Just at Barcelona airport waiting for my flight back into Manchester.

Had GG hold off sending it until I was back if my holiday.
Will get some pictures up later, if I don't the Mrs has worked out it's not a £900 LP studio.

It's all in the shoulders, depth has always been broadly similar.  Older R8s had very chunky shoulders and R9s more rounded.  The 2017 R8 I bought has a similar smaller shoulder profile as the older R9s.

That's a fair point.  "Cost of ownership" could end up less for an R9 I agree.

So tempted! Got to remember im not a massive fan of LP's and I cant afford it!
    Shit.

Managed to get one from guitar guitar and got delivered yesterday. They had at as available for order but not in stock. Put a deposit down and thought nothing of it and didn't think it would come through.

Setup is pretty much spot on. Weight is great at 8.8lbs and neck profile is .9" at 1st and 1" at 12th. Stopbar tailpiece is flat down without the strings touching the bridge, so neck angle is good.

As I said before on here, im a picky bugger at the best of times but this is awesome.

I put this to them as a price match with themselves. There was no recognition of the inconsistency and they said the 3.5k was the best they could do on this.
