But isn't that the real issue here.. Words like darker, lighter, scooped, creamy etc etc
They are all subjective and don't really mean anything in real terms... If you are changing the sound of a guitar be it because of different woods and construction or changing your EQ or guitar settings you have to describe it some way.. Tone is as good a word as any for me.. Be it an accurate description or not...
Sort of like people calling things by the popular brand name rather than what they are like a hoover for a vacuum cleaner.
As long as we all understand each other (well relatively) im ok with what ever words people want to use.

My OP was partly a joke, but partly also a serious point about the fact that if we don’t understand each other then we can get into all sorts of a mess when discussing the overall sound of a guitar.
I like timbre as a word because it distinguishes from the rather 2 dimensional concept of tone on it’s own.
....
and I think EVH already told everyone that “Volume is tone”

Yes it is actually... You obviously have much better understanding of my guitars than I do

I'm not saying that's me.. I'm just saying.. I don#t get these threads AT ALL that say "oh look - he can play through this or with that and it still sounds great" - er YEAH, because the guy focuses on playing well and can adapt.

So does that mean that instead of it being "tone is in the fingers" it should be "timbre is in the fingers"?
Now I can see why we say the word tone instead
