Just listing these is too easy and could effortlessly continue til everyone got bored of it.

A better game would be for people to state the names of artists they think aren't derivitive and others can then enlighten them on who they are derived from.

Because even the Beatles are derivitve so I don't think anyone could win the game.

(Only meaning artists that a decent amount of people actually like, not some obscure pretentous hipster who records 5 minutes of the radio between stations)
Too right to your first statement.
But, I suspect that there cannot possibly be a genuinely non-derivative artist, as that would mean they would have to have existed in total isolation until they finally produced a work, based on ???
Plus, all musicologists & researchers would be out of a job.

However in the spirit of the question, Captain Beefheart.

I don’t know enough about the good Captain to comment but Black Sabbath don’t have a lot in terms of obvious antecedents...

...unless of course you know different!

That's my point - there isn't anyone who isn't, therefore it's silly to dismiss an artist as derivitve because all music is

And I don't get Kasabian either. All the swagger of Oasis without any of the songs.
I once heard Kasabian described as Kula Shaker for Nuts readers:-)

    A truly atrocious band.

In a weird way I'm happy to see the negativity towards Kasabian as they're in a handful of bands whose popularity has always confused me as if I'm missing something

I like that. I saw them at Glastonbury (topical!) when they were new and on the way up. They were fucking atrocious and I'd got out of bed way too early to schlepp across to the far side of the compound to witness it. I've never forgiven them.

I think The Shaggs came pretty close to this.

    The Shaggs
    haha good mention

Maybe they are the only truly original band!

Not that they weren't trying to be, they just didn't have any musical talent lol

Good Gad Sir! I believe you may have stopped the game in its tracks.
They really were, entirely in a league of their own.

Robyn Hitchcock ripped off Syd Barrett as did David Bowie initially but managed to transcend the influence.
Gary Lightbody ripped off Lou Barlow for all he was worth and didn't.
Jake Bugg was a laughable Dylan cover act until he was kidnapped by music lovers and held in a bamboo cage in a secret location.

I wish I could find the guy on Youtube who dressed like a late '60's troubadour and put on a fake John Martyn voice but I looked and looked. I guess he's gone back to accountancy.

That slew of bands who copied The Stone Roses. So many. So many.

@ICBM is talented, but I never had him down as a ventriloquist.

Would that be Arthur Brown's Kingdom Come?

Just used the text replacement to indicate both times that these bands were hugely Led Zep influenced. Kingdom Come were a much hyped late 80's Zep-alike. It's a crazy world but no Arthur Brown.

Since no one's yet mentioned them, Wolf Mother are another Led Zep copy.

It's funny, they seem to inspire more direct copies without change than other bands.
