Not necessarily whole albums, but there's a few songs I struggle with.

Cornflake Girl by Tori Amos was a favourite of mine years ago until I found out, quite by accident, what the subject matter was - I still struggle with it now.

Driving with the Brakes On by Del Amitri is difficult for me, again an epic song but the opening lines make me feel very uncomfortable.

I also tend to avoid music which has bad language for the most part.  Sometimes it's done with artistic merit and I can accept it but mostly I find it uneccessary and used just for the sake of it.

I wish Johnny Marr would just re-record the entire back catalogue of The Smiths. I can still listen to it I guess, but christ Morrissey is a fuckmuppet.

Tori Amos, after I was watching the great show Bob's Burgers and this came on...

I can't really listen to her music without thinking of this

I once heard on the radio, by Russ Williams I think, that she sits on a deliberately knobbly piano stool so she can achieve, ahem, self pleasure while she’s performing.

Not sure how true that is but by the way she gyrates all over the place when she’s performing nothing would surprise me.

40 years ago I went to see Gary Glitter at the local student union bar. For a number of reasons it was a great night out, finished off by GG who was a great showman! Was one of the best concerts I have been to for atmosphere. Bought a video of the performance, which was consigned to the bin a few years later. The rest as they say is history......

I saw GG twice around 35 years ago and remember them as great gigs.
I wonder how the musicians, producers, etc, involved feel now about those records never being played.

He really was a great performer! Could whip up a crowd as good as anybody i've ever seen and better than most. I guess it's just another case of "flawed genius". The music industry and performing arts in general is full of such cases, but it's difficult to separate the man from the music in my view and hence I will not listen too or watch his music any more. More's the pity because I play in a 50s/60s/70s covers band and some of his stuff would be right up our street. I would guess the musicians, pruducers etc. probably have mixed feelings, not least because they will no longer get any financial benifit from their work as it's not being played!

    Haha.

TBH she's so nutty that I don't think that'd bother her in the least.

Just listen to the lyrics in this one!

Out of interest, what’s the subject matter of Cornflake Girl that put you off?

    From Wikipedia:

"The inspiration for "Cornflake Girl" came from a conversation she was having with a longtime friend about female genital mutilation in Africa, specifically how a close female family member would betray the victim by performing the procedure. Amos has said that growing up, the name they gave to girls who would hurt you despite close friendship was cornflake girls."

Yep. Fakesoundofprogress and the last album they did (with Rooftops et al) were full of absolute bangers.

Sorry @MagicPigDetective, I missed your comment, but yes, as above, the whole FGM thing makes me feel really uncomfortable.  Absolutely barbaric.  I don't wish to put my head in the sand and pretend that it doesn't happen but neither do I wish to dwell on it every time a certain song comes on the radio.

    Clapton. The Enoch Powell stuff.
I used to have a big problem with that until I watched the 'Life In Twelve Bars' documentary. I now think he's genuinely remorseful about it - I hadn't realised just how serious a drunk he was, and while that isn't a complete excuse it does explain it to a large extent. In the film he came across as so deeply ashamed and embarrassed by what he did that he's afraid that no public apology would ever be seen as enough, and his having personally apologised to the many black musicians he counted as friends and who continued to work with him says more, to me.

I do find The Smiths a bit difficult to listen to now though.

"Take these three items, some WD-40, a vise grip, and a roll of duct tape. Any man worth his salt can fix almost any problem with this stuff alone." - Walt Kowalski

"Only two things are infinite - the universe, and human stupidity. And I'm not sure about the universe." - Albert Einstein

I like to think I know what I like...if it's good it's good and who cares about the opinions of others.
But sometimes, someone says something you can't get over.
My younger sister once asked what I was listening to.
"Caravanserai," I said..."By Santana...he played Woodstock while tripping on LSD."
And knowing this made me pretty cool too...

"It sounds like the music they play on the telly when a magician is sawing a lady in half," my sister says.
Haven't been able to listen to the thing since.

I had that on tape once it’s real good , nothing wrong with her description either , they played pretty funky stuff, saw so many television magicians perform tricks to the theme from shaft
