Weirdest "good" movies you've ever seen

What's Hot
I'm not talking Inland Empire or miserable shite like Enter the Void, Werckmeister Harmonies or Lars von Trier's work, rather, enjoyable but fucking weird movies you've seen.

This tops the list at present

Honourable mentions:
Mulholland Drive
Uncle Boonmee who can recall his past lives
Dogtooth

  • Loads of weird films in the past that I've loved, but then I like weird films in general so some of the ones I like are probably not appealing to a wider audience!

Recent ones that spring to mind:

'Sorry To Bother You...'.   A dystopian near-future film that doesn't seem too strange until it hits a certain point/twist about two thirds through. Once you see that sudden shift in tone you'll know exactly what I mean!

'The Lobster' The future of dating!! (possibly...)

MANDY with Nic Cage is a wild, psychedelic, violent romp. didn't know what to expect but it's bloody brilliant.

love Lynch and Mulholland DriveBlue Velvet but not seen the whole oeuvre.

Dunno if it's weird enough but...

Brightburn. It's a 'what if' sorta thing where Superman grows up a little emo shitbag

EDIT: just remembered A Ghost Story. Enjoyed that

  • I had a bit of an art house/ gay and lesbian cinema period and enjoyed at the time films like A Zed and Two Noughts, The Draughtsman's Contract, My Beautiful Launderette but I don't know if I have the patience for modern equivalents.

I watch a few French language films and they are invariably a bit weird compared to mainstream Hollywood. For example, The Extraordinary Adventures of Adele Blanc-Sec which is sort of Indiana Jones with nudity; great fun film but I wonder who the target audience was!
Tipton is a small fishing village in the borough of Sandwell.

    Cloud Atlas.
Weird in that it's not like any other film I've seen. Very hard to pigeon hole it.

You said no Von Trier - but Melancholy and Breaking the Waves. :)

I need to re-watch that. I've seen it once and thought at the time that it would need at least a second go.

Most of Terry Gilliam's films are very weird too - Brazil and The Imaginarium Of Doctor Parnassus to name just a couple.

"Take these three items, some WD-40, a vise grip, and a roll of duct tape. Any man worth his salt can fix almost any problem with this stuff alone." - Walt Kowalski

"Only two things are infinite - the universe, and human stupidity. And I'm not sure about the universe." - Albert Einstein

  • Charlie Kaufman's Synechdoche, New York is simultaneously deeply odd, and very very good.  I'm of the "it's-a-proper-masterpiece" school of thought on this one, but it does divide people.

This. I was just about to mention Brazil and Time Bandits.

I thought that was a pretty standard break up/cult film. Very good, though.

I'm a big fan of Lost Highway too.

Existenz is worth a watch, I think it's a David Kronenburg.
