Weirdest "good" movies you've ever seen

  • Primer. An amazingly well plotted and scripted and believable time travel movie. If you think you understood it after the first watch...you didn't.

Dark City, the best neo-noir science fiction about an amnesiac murder suspect that you'll ever see ;)

MANDY with Nic Cage is a wild, psychedelic, violent romp. didn't know what to expect but it's bloody brilliant.

love Lynch and Mulholland DriveBlue Velvet but not seen the whole oeuvre.
I love Mandy but is was less weird than the others I mentioned haha. Speaking of Cagey, for a cop movie, Bad Lieutenant: port of call does get excellently strange.

Charlie Kaufman's Synechdoche, New York is simultaneously deeply odd, and very very good.  I'm of the "it's-a-proper-masterpiece" school of thought on this one, but it does divide people.
not seen that one but i love Adaptation (another Nic Cage - king of weird/great movies) and that seems to get a lukewarm response from people

  • Adaptation is probably my least favourite Kaufman... maybe I was too young. Being John Malkovitch is way funnier.

Anyone who says they understand Primer, didn't see Primer....

Great film.  IMO it's criminal Shane Carruth isn't making more films.

I'm quite partial to Peter Greenaway's oeuvre. All a bit batty but highly engaging and intriguing.

And also from about that time, The Man Who Fell To Earth.

    Cloud Atlas.
Weird in that it's not like any other film I've seen. Very hard to pigeon hole it.
I need to re-watch that. I've seen it once and thought at the time that it would need at least a second go.

Most of Terry Gilliam's films are very weird too - Brazil and The Imaginarium Of Doctor Parnassus to name just a couple.
I've watched Cloud Atlas 3 times now and it gets better each time. I think it's an extraordinary film.

I'm a big fan of Lost Highway too.

Existenz is worth a watch, I think it's a David Kronenburg.
Would you say Existenz is just sci fi  compared to the other weird stuff people have posted ? I’ve seen it ,it is weird  I think eraserhead is weirder though

Brain Dead (early Peter Jackson) was weird in a comedy film way.

Irriversible wasn't an easy watch. One of the most brutal films I've seen. Far more shocking than any shoot'em ups because the violence is up close.

    Elle by Paul Verhoeven.
A bizarre story but presented in a fairly believable way.
