Nobody would believe such mentalism even theoretically possible.

The independents such as Thorpy and Feline.

Also, the quest by manufacturers to make solid state sound like valves.

I almost didn't suggest it because he's after ostensibly "short" subject matter... this could not be that.

Rather than gear, I'd do a doc on the continued popularity of Django gypsy jazz and it's modern players. It's a trend that along with classical guitar continued in its original form relatively unaltered, yet doesn't quite fit into the scholarly folk music tradition, partly due to it's gypsy origins and relative modernity. American jazz by contrast, despite being as recent and being invented by a minority demographic too, has been co-opted by universities and the establishment.
John Jorgensen is a fascinating guy plus there's the UK scene as angle.
Whilst I would watch the shit out of that it doesn't really tie in with the interests of what the people who would be paying for it to be made. Wish I could say more.
I remember watching a documentary ( probably on Sky Arts) that was almost exactly that.

Whilst he may not be breaking new ground Thorpy may win as the human interest story with guitars - move from the army, new business, involving pro musicians, link with Dan Coffins, work done for charity, etc.

    +1 for Harry Seven's vaults.

The struggles of the modern bricks and mortar guitar shops, including online competition, bedroom dealers and whatnot.

Who in Europe is pushing the envelope in the guitar world?
I saw a youtube comment to the effect that John Norum is the greatest virtuoso guitarist of all time the other day, maybe start investigating there.

Tracking down the real Harley Benton would surely make for thrilling viewing.

  • John Hill, (Ex Fender) and I, discussed some years ago, that someone, should do a documentary on, the Late great, Alan Murphy, & his contribution / Influence on the British guitar scene, during the eighties.?

    Maybe not your thing, though?

Just to clarify, not looking for topics or subjects so much - that is pretty much defined and set in stone in the post in the OP. Looking for people or companies that are doing something singular.

How about the upsurge in build-your-own courses/kit/content? If you want sustainability to feature - Mark Bailey is a net contributor to the grid if I recall. Built his own generating wind turbine.

Brook are a good shout, but fairly traditional.

    Turnstone as mentioned.

Mike at Stonewolf - nobody builds resin/fancy timber as individual as he does.

@Andyjr1515 had built a number of interesting guitars and basses.  @GoldenEraGuitars and others have tapped into the custom finished guitar parts market.

Not sure how successful that would be as a proper documentary but I'd love to see it if someone made it even just as a YouTube video.
