Clear coats are now on, waiting for them to go nice and hard before I start the lacquer checking process
Petes old Fender Road Worn Tele will be getting a refin.
I was waiting to see what the grain was like before I decided between a 3 tone burst or a solid colour, the grain is ok so could go either way.
I have these colours at home already: 3 Tone early 60s burst, Shell Pink, Shorline Gold, Fiesta Red or Surf Green
I’m thinking Aged Surf Green with a black guard and rosewood neck....
I'm considering a refin of a decent guitar so rather than my usual sand spray over existing finish then clear - if I strip back to wood I thought I needed to undercoat, then colour, then clear - but you haven't undercoated the jm obviously - so did you use sanding sealer - colours - clear coat?
What stages did you sand?
Thanks in advance
The grain on the alder Jag body is tight so I didn’t use a coat of sealer, instead I tested an area directly with the clear amber, it sealed it well and didn’t get ‘absorbed” so all good.
i then used the tobacco brown on the edges and eased in the burst, once I had it pretty even I then blended with a coat of clear cherry.
i let it dry and the next day gave it light rubdown with 600/800 grit wet and dry (it was pretty flat already).
Three coats of clear followed, they were rubbed down with 600/800/1200 then I gave it a light going over with Tcut, leaves it wit a semi gloss finish.
Hope that helps
I’m not too worried about the odd imperfection where the body had been previously road worn, ill use these as a starting point for the ageing process, using the old less is more approach
I’ll need buy one!
Not going too heavy of the wear just yet, just some dinks and scrapes in the exposed edge areas
Shoreline Gold over Three Tone Sunburst
Ive tried the stencil approach on this one to make sure I get down to the burst layer “accurately”, need some work work to “organically” shape some of the chips and also get down to the wood in places.
Lacquer checking next after the nitro has hardened up.
I used a CS Mike Landau Strat as a reference for the ageing on this one

I am on the look out for a MIM 50s one though to keep it all Fender MIM.
