That is pretty much my perfect guitar! What is that called? (Yes, yes, clever clogs, I know it's a Gibson, but a Gibson what?)
    Custom DC Special...

    $4.5k ???

I'm sure I can make one for less than that ...
    :D

I don’t really understand how, but with lockdown and furlough and absolutely zero real work to do, I don’t seem to have had much progress on a whole long list of projects.

Still at least £2k more than I'd be prepared to pay for it.

Yes, I'd love one but they'd need to halve the price.

Here's my body blank with the London plane top trimmed to size. Inspired by @Corvus's binding I'm going multi-ply too but with the main piece tortoiseshell, so W/B/W/T with a stepped channel as Stewmac shows.

Sorry Tony I won't derail your thread any more!

Yeah - bugger off out of my thread  @SteveRobinson ; and start your own ...

... but only so that we can see the progress of your build in more detail!!

I've got some of that London Plane from @Rabs too, and keen to see how it turns out when finished.
    :)

Still prevaricating on the LP DC, so I made lots of sawdust and started prepping a couple more bodies instead

These will both be capped.  They're actually 3 piece bodies - both have got "wings" glued on at the edges  of the lower part as the planks I had were *almost* wide enough for one piece bodies, but not quite!

I think I'm just going to carve the top of this one, capping it would be a waste of the figuring and flaming in the wood.  Just haven't decided what body shape to go for yet.

Nice job on the wings -
I think I read somewhere the multi-piece bodies have the benefit of lowering the fundamental/resonant frequency of the body which can be a good thing.

(Made me wonder if I could have done similar on the Idigbo DC. )

Looking forward to seeing these develop - are you going for all 3 builds at the same time ?

    Cheers @PeteC ;

I've got these 3 blanks now sorted - I recut and rejointed the Idigbo this morning because I wasn't happy with it.  I'll probably bandsaw the body shape out of that later today.

Plus I've got the original LP DC Jr that started this thread off.

    Plus I've recently re-found this  ...

... which is another self-build from the days (long ago days) when I was still persevering with the Wudtone stains. The front is OK, but the back is definitely an unappealing orange.

I think I "put it to one side" because of the way that the back had taken the stain.  It looks worse in the flesh.

Anyways, it's no longer orange ...

    ... so that's Work-in-Progress #5.

I think it's my first-ever build of a guitar-that's-not-a-Tele.  I made the neck on that one too (I often cheat and use GSP's necks).  I should probably rummage around to find some suitable hardware and put it together.

Yesterday - inspired by your solid MDF design - I re-made my thicknessing sled with 6mm thick aluminium and checked for any deflection with the router in place.  Possibly 0.1mm of flex, but equally that could have been measurement error.  So, I'm happy with that now.

And then I worked out why my thicknesser was struggling to thickness anything.  The blades were ~10 years old.

Luckily, they're double-sided blades and so I swapped them around and the thicknesser is now doing its thing a lot more easily!

Right, I'm done procrastinating on this one.  Decision made.

I'd already sorted out the hardware to make a simple DCJr, and Ash is currently putting a dog ear base plate on a P90, with the intention of it going in here, so that's what's going to happen.

I'm going to build a separate LP DC with a carved top ... watch out for another thread on that one!

This will be a standard cherry red finish. over gold grain filler.

    First coat now on

And up close, nice and golden ...

I'm hoping that, with another coat or two of the red, and then slowly building up the oil over the top, the gold will catch the light nicely ....

    (Might also sound OK too).

Got this one all done now.  Bumping the thread so I can find it tomorrow, when I might just add a pic or two.

There's an interesting "feature" on it ...

If you've followed any of my previous builds, you'll know that I don't like bits of cheap and ugly black plastic on my builds.

But, what do you do with a LP Jr with an exposed neck join - because that doesn't look too good either!

    Ah-hah ....

Now, tell me that's *not* a better look?

    Neat, huh!!
    • I took a photo of the body, from the bridge position up to the neck join.
    • Photoshopped the photo to extend the grain lines over the neck join
    • Got the amended photo printed onto 3mm acrylic
    • Cut the acrylic into a scratchplate shape
    • Bevelled the edges

The trickiest part was actually getting a decent photo (lighting) that was perfectly perpendicular to the body.

It's stuck to the body (double sided tape) rather than screwed because screws  made it look more like a scratchplate!

(PS - the photo above is before attaching the acrylic to the body, it actually lines up better than the photo above shows).
