I tried the Astra for about 20 minutes, it went back..
Any particular reason? From what I’ve seen it’s the pick of the bunch.

I think it’s great.  Very high quality fidelity, almost perfect reproduction of vintage units.the ce1 and phase 90 are amazingly good, and I have an original 1976 jc120.

It seems daft to spend all that money on a pedal that replicates a CE-1 when you can buy a real CE-1 circuit from Boss for much less.
I'd understand if it was super programmable but it's not.

I think there are quite a few people who like to use modulation in fairly traditional/ moderate ways but don’t want to be tied down to a single modulation or having four or five modulation pedals on a board. Very high quality models of a few classic modulations in a single box seems like a solution for many people I’d have thought.

I get that, but at that point I would want MIDI, presets etc.

It seems to fall between two stools

@Wazmeister so the one to go for is the delay in your opinion?

How does the Starlight compare to the likes of the Volante?
For me the strength of the Volante is i.) its deep replication of tape mechanics ii.) the stereo and panning options.

The Starlight offers a few more types of delay, and the DMM (as many have alreday stated) are the closest to the original. Very sweet and musical indeed, without all the hassle that comes with a ‘real’ DMM.

  • Bit of a damp squib all round then. For some at least.

Seriously, I thought the Starlight was worth maybe £100. But £350? Jog on. I'm glad I tried it before buying, because I would've been disappointed.

    Bye!

I'm still tempted by the Starlight mostly as a non-finicky, tweakable DMM. But in no hurry

I totally get why some are a bit underwhelmed as obviously it’s not trying to do the Volante thing or crazy MIDI implantation or whatever.

So, anyone done a side by side comparison Golden vs Flint? Big or small improvement, or do some prefer the Flint?

I tried it in the shop, so no need to send it back. But it was a bit bland and twee for me. The Volante is much much better, just purely from a sound perspective.

I went a bit nuts buying some new delays recently, as per my other thread. DM2w, Memory Man TT1100, Belle Epoch, and MXR Carbon Copy Deluxe. They all sound better than the Starlight.

It's interesting how delays capture us isn't it mate ?

I'm like you, I could own loads of them...

So, if you HAD to choose just 2.... what would they be ?

Out of those.... the Carbon Copy Deluxe and the DM2w.

Out of all of my delays?? The Carbon Copy Deluxe and the Timeline.

I'll change my mind in 5minutes!

    @Wazmeister & @WiresDreamDisasters this is a great side question.

Id go with a Volante (I love it and it’s easy to use) and a Line 6 DL4 because no matter what I try that has some sounds in it that other delays just don’t. Some may find that a bad thing, I adore those noises. If I’m recording regardless of what’s on my board a DL4 is there too.

I've been using the Golden Reverb for the last month and love it.  All I want from a Reverb is really really good plate and spring sounds, not interested in the ambient, psychedelic stuff.

For me it's a much better option that the BigSky.

So upshot on the Starlight is that I shouldn't be getting rid of my Future Factory any time soon?

Tried the Starlight in a shop (!). It sounds really good. My main takeaway was that the repeats are quite present and you don't have much control over the EQ of them. If you were in a U2 cover band, or liked hearing individual delay repeats, or were very concerned with replicating vintage units, and had a lot of spare cash and could live with only one preset, then it would make a lot of sense. For myself, there isn't much advantage over El Capistan - slightly wider range of flavours of modulation, but less control over darkness and washiness, so if you use delay mostly for washes or pads or pseudo-reverb or subtle modulation then El Capistan wins I think. I liked the way the Starlight wouldn't look out of place on the control panel of War Rocket Ajax in Flash Gordon, though.

I was never massively into reverb, had the immerse and sold it, but the golden has totally changed my opinion of reverb…its pure magic. Powered with a strymon ojai, really amazing sound, from subtle to full on. I can’t understand the criticism here, if the other 2 pedal are like the golden they are worth every penny.
