...& I don't think I'd buy "Hank Marvin plays Jesus & Mary Chain".

    I so would!

I'd prefer the other way round. I nearly posted April Skies as my perfect tone...

LOL. But I suspect you'd only listen to it once... & I doubt his former backing singer would be into the project.

Other way round might be OK actually, if they did it properly, they're pretty surfy & I always see The Shadows & The Ventures as a kind of pair.

I don't really try to copy any other guitarist's tone.

There are good examples of recorded guitar sounds across multiple genres, but those sounds are the players' own. I can't really think off the top of my head of one example which I think of as 'perfect'. It's such a personal thing.

I think Carlos' Yamaha SG2000 period was his best tone. A friend who was in music retail at the time was told by the Yahama rep that his guitars were all fitted with original Gibson PAFs which no doubt helped....

Yep, he was probably still using the SG2000 on the original recording...  they're great guitars...weigh a ton though!

My favourite Sanatana album has always been Santana III - what was he using then, Les Pauls?

Hi The Sg2000 era Santana brought some classic tones although ISTR Samba pa ti was recorded on the gibson SG special with p90's the original is not a very humbucking type tone. Around that era he was playing around with ISTR a Norlin era CSB les paul custom, later the L6s. I also heard they were original PAF in the SG2000

In terms of heavier sounds, something I've often tried to replicate as a catch-all metal rhythm tone has been Jerry Cantrell on Facelift and Dirt:

It's a really thick, heavy, ballsy sound.
