Got any favourite 'old school' metal albums?

I'm thinking more of the Dio/Iron Maiden type era rather than more modern stuff hence the 'old school' label.

Particularly interested in good live albums, although happy to hear of any faves! I'm just in the mood for this sort of music at the moment.

You mean to sell, or just to recommend?

Gary Moore - Corridors of Power
Roland said: Scales are primarily a tool for categorising knowledge, not a rule for what can or cannot be played.
Supportact said: [my style is] probably more an accumulation of limitations and bad habits than a 'style'.

Heaven and Hell - Black Sabbath.

    Pyromania - Def Leppard

    Operation Mindcrime - Queensryche

Nothing surprising probably - I'm not a massive metal fan anymore, but they were amongst my faves when younger.

Bad News - This Is Bad News. Pretty much the definitive hair metal/new wave of British Heavy metal/nu metal/new romantics album ever.

    Live records:
Maiden's Live after death is a classic.
I love Ozzy's Live and Loud. It made me want to play electric guitar (previously I wanted to be a drummer).
Helloween's Keeper of the seven Keys part II is another one of my favorites. Their Live in the UK record is a great live record from that era.
Those were my 3 favorite bands when I was all into heavy metal.

  • Demon - The Unexpected Guest.

Bit of a cult classic, the NWOBHM era bands tended to make rather sketchy albums but this is a properly made job.

    Judas Priest - British Steel.

Pretty much the definition of old school metal.

Probably almost anything by Accept, the only album I remember is Balls to the Wall.

I'm leaving now if we're anything to do with New Romantics.

Judas Priest - Unleashed in The East is a great live album.

Sticking to the NWOBHM theme check out a band called Blitzkrieg

This is probably my favourite album of that early 80s era. They are killer live too, even in their 70s.

If you are looking for live stuff then -

MSG - One Night at Budokan
    Scorpions - World Wide Live
AC/DC - If you want blood
Whitesnake - Live in the Heart of the City
    Kiss - Alive
Ozzy (with Randy Rhoads) - Tribute

Edit - maybe more heavy rock than heavy metal

Dio's Last In Line is one of the best metal albums; it's not live, but I saw them on that tour so I have the memories to go with it!
UFO's Strangers In The Night isn't really metal, but it is one of the best live (with overdubs) albums.

Since my original post I've been racking my brain trying to remember what the definitive album was for me, and now I remember:

Epic album with fantastic solos. Diamond Head should have been massive. For me they blew it pushing out the drummer and bassist. They lost a cohesive band identity.

Roughly local heroes for me. They gigged a lot, didn’t get a proper record deal for their first album (when those things were important), made an album that nobody liked (Canterbury) and disappeared. But hugely influential, in certain circles anyway. Also, and most importantly, there was a photo that included an 18 year old me on their website. Last time I checked it was gone :unamused:
