One of my favourite artists, so talented. Had all his stuff on 'cassette' back in the day, including the banned Black Album. I've just learnt a beginners version of Purple Rain which is still a bit,err, sketchy and doesn't include any of his genius, but sounds a bit like it (in places). 

The film was underrated too and well worth a watch if you've never seen it.

Ah great! I remember buying this so clearly, when it came out in our local record shop. I'd bought the lead singles ("When Doves Cry" ad "Purple Rain", I think - at least, those are the singles I own), and so had to get the album. Loved it from the first, it's got many memories for me, including of my first girlfriend at around the same time, who was called Nickie (I didn't meet her like that though )

I might dig out the original vinyl just for the heck of it even though I'm not usually bothered about vinyl

Slight correction though - it's from 1984, not 1991. It's somehow timeless and yet you'd be hard-pressed to find an album so quintessentially 80s!

Funnily enough I saw a girl wearing a T-shirt of the album cover a couple of days ago.  She can't have been born when it was released... same year as Nevermind, which also launched a million T-shirts.

My fault too, for being too lazy to check.  I was slightly surprised that I hadn't remembered it was 1991 (which I now know it wasn't!).  But I'm surprised it was as early as 1984.

I remember going to see the film at the cinema with my sister. By 1986 I’d moved away so it places it prior to 86 in my head. Not much of a reference point for anyone else admittedly (unless my sister has joined the forum in which case what does Chris want for his birthday?). 

I had a couple of tracks on earlier, it’s very 1980s. You can hear the grey and pink duvet covers.

I quite liked the Princester too. That note in the Purple Rain solo, probably the best single note ever played on an electric guitar.
