Joinmyband Headaches

Just want a moan really.
Moved to Leeds recently and the biggest draw was the music scene. Thought it would be easy to recreate my band from down south. Put adds on JMB and my god, the crap I've dealt with on there. I have had loads of people that are super keen, one guy even sent me videos of him playing the songs and then when it came to arrange a date to get together he just completely ghosted me.
A bass player confirmed the studio location and time and then just didn't show up, left me there to pay for the thing without a word. I figured he was probably some student that decided to get on the beers instead. Dived into their profile and it was a 50 y.o man. Is it really that hard to just say "sorry, I've had a change of heart but good luck anyway"
I've also had about 5 people start messaging and then completely stop with no explanation.

I just don't get it, we're all adults, how hard is it just to send a courtesy text? I'm half tempted to name and shame them on JMB.

If you arrange studio time and then just don't show, then fuck you.

  • Join my band is an acquired taste with a lot of strange foibles - the studio thing is very disappointing though - hope you connect with some better people soon

That sucks - I've had little success on join my band, most ads seem to be either people extremely new or people claiming to be a pro gigging band needing someone to drop their whole life for the honour of playing in "horse wart"

Except that semi-pro musicians, EDIT or rather, wannabe-semi-pro-musicians, are seriously over-represented with flakes.

Flakey, flakey people with half-arsed work ethics.

  • Yeah, this isn’t a joinmyband issue really, it’s an “other people” issue.

Networking is always going to be better than advertising. Can you find some other likeminded people to get in with, and build from there?

Arguably easier to find the right person first, then teach them to play a musical instrument ;)

  • Going to attend a few local jam nights and go watch some bands. I figured that people who want to play will be out doing it some form or another already.

Also full of guitarists claiming to be pro level and wanting to join a gigging band. Come on - if you’re pro level then why aren’t you gigging now eh?
I play guitar because I enjoy it rather than because I’m any good at it

  • I've had good mileage out of JMB but it's always difficult. Getting someone to attend an audition is half the battle - last time a shortlist of five or six quickly dwindled to just two. I've mentioned this before here, but I once asked a potential bass player "come down to see if you like it," and while he did turn up, he forgot to bring his bass.

Had the same with JMB one lad sent a demo of him singing sounded good asked to have meet up (always try and do that if we can) nothing, just no further response. Band mix is better but not free and you still get clowns occasionally.
    Don't touch that dial.

  • I don’t remember how we found him but I also had a guy show up without a bass once… he didn’t get the gig!

It goes both ways too. I messaged a guy who was looking for a keys player for a new local blues band. I'm a fairly decent player, but not a blues specialist - pretty sure I could hold my own at a basic level from day 1 though.

I was straight up about that and just got the reply "sorry must know blues"

8 weeks later he's still advertising every few days...

Is there a music shop in your part of the country that might put you in contact with other like minded musicians?

Yeah and one of them hosts jam nights so I'll try that.

My previous drummer, it took us two years to find him but he's a great friend now. I look up to him in a way.

'twas always such. I remember a wayward drummmer we were involved with not showing up. Went round his house, his mum told us he had decided to go out for Sunday lunch in a pub instead. His mum.

I’ve had the same experience as @sev112 . I’ve also met some people who it hasn’t worked out with in a band.
