It goes both ways too. I messaged a guy who was looking for a keys player for a new local blues band. I'm a fairly decent player, but not a blues specialist - pretty sure I could hold my own at a basic level from day 1 though.

I was straight up about that and just got the reply "sorry must know blues"

8 weeks later he's still advertising every few days...
In that 8 weeks if he’d accepted you  you’d probably have meshed with them all by now & picked up on their particular blues style & fitted in great . Oh well his loss I guess but a shame

  • @Rkphilpot for what it's worth your ad was exactly what you need to post - specific, includes songs and requirements. You've got a strong plan for what you want to do and how to execute it, which is miles ahead of what most posts on there have. I've seen it a few times and it's something I'd be into; only didn't message because my spare time is a bit fluid at the moment and didn't want to get into messages and waste both our energy if it didn't link up.

Unfortunately JMB is very much like internet dating, in which you have to sift through a swimming pool of crap to extract the pearls. There will be a lot of messages that don't go anywhere after the first few back and forth's, and even fewer that go past the talking stage.

  • @borntohang I appreciate that feedback, I wasn't sure if people were reading it and thinking they were signing up the the third Reich. It is specific and it may come across a little demanding. However I wanted to be completely upfront from the off about my shift work and what I want to do. What I was a part of down south worked so well, all three of us loved it and it only lasted a year so I feel like I have a lot left to give a project like that.

I'm always happy to meet other musicians, even if it's just to jam or go to jam nights so if you get some spare time and want to head into Leeds or something just let me know!

    Cheers

Around here I think everything has moved to Facebook groups.
Are there facebook groups for band recruitment?
I started out with nothing..... but I've still got most of it left (Seasick Steve)

Yeah, loads, certainly for round here. Also gumtree seems popular.

Think I got lucky with my first covers band, they'd already been going for years and all I had to do was learn the songs and then turn up to the gigs and play them, we've only ever had about 3 practices in 10 years.
Compared to one I started with my friend, practice every week for a year, play a gig and it's decent. Book another gig but 2 members go awol. Eventually they resurface and they've forgotten all the songs. Book a practice and its like they forgot how to play their instruments. Practice every week again for a year, play another gig and the same repeats.

I keep toying with the idea of putting an ad on JMB that says "Mediocre rhythm guitarist and singer looking for like-minded idiots to actually make something happen. Preferably originals but covers as long as they're not the same shit as everyone else" just to see what happens.

"Headaches" is an excellent name for a band.

Pounding bass, one of those snare drums that makes a "ping" noise, guitar through a Smokey then straight into the PA, distorted vocals... And the whole mix sidechained to the kick drum. Maybe with a saxophone.

    Would listen.

  • I'm sorry to say that I've probably been a JMB headache on a couple of occasions, albeit I would not have gone to the trouble of arranging to meet in a studio and then bailing out without notice. More just that I get the idea in my head that I'd like to perform in public and that's hard to organise by myself, so look for what would normally (for normal people) be reasonable good options but then usually while messaging about it, i remember I don't have the reliably available free time to do anything regularly, and also that people don't really like the same music as me so I tend to get messages from people who want to do different things than I do, and that doesn't sit very easily with my stupid brain. I then go back to thinking that trying to do anything of this sort is basically just vanity and day dreaming on my part, and that I'm neither musically nor mentally capable of doing it.

Most recently when I tried it, I had one eye on my day job company seemingly losing clients all over the place and was thinking of ways to enhance my piano hustle income should the worst happen. I got two people come back who were keen, one of which was a Rolling Stones tribute who needed a keys player and another who wanted to play "folk rock" from the 70s and 80s. I'm afraid I did end up going quiet after a few messages as neither was really interesting to me, but then eventually felt so bad about it that i sent a way too long oversharing message back about why and apologising.

So hopefully I'm only a mild headache, the kind you get from squinting for too long that's easily resolved by resting your eyes for half an hour.

I know I'm annoying and those two messaging me also think I'm a complete knobhead or at the very least a total wet wipe, but unfortunately they will have to join the crowds of other people who also think I'm annoying
Please note my communication is not very good, so please be patient with me

There will be a number of people who think “just what I’m looking for”. Number one, there’s a singer. Number two, he only plays rhythm, so there’s plenty of space for some lead guitar.

Having read this thread I thought I’d give bandmix a try having had zero responses to my recent ad on JMB. Sent 2 messages in last 3 days. One a male vocalist seeking a guitarist (same age as me). The other a female vocalist. Both put contact details in their ads. I tried both. Zero response.

    Starting to think it’s me…

Par for the course. To be in a band you need to turn up and play. Most wannabees don’t even get to step one.

  • @Open_G It's not you. It's the way of the world, people sign up to JMB or BandMix and think they'll get the people they need that day. They'll have moved into their next project the following week - painting a bedroom, selling handmade Christmas cards through a school fair, watching Big Brother or I'm a Celebrity...

I've seen a lot of crap over the years. It's gotten worse this last 15-20 since those Simon Cowell shows.

I'm normally of the view similar to that of Oscar Wilde - I wouldn't want to join any club that would accept me as a member

Right you are, sorry. I go to a pub quiz where we all hate quotes rounds and have been known to just write Oscar Wilde for all ten out of protest
