I quite like 5 Watt World and Rick Beato. I sae the two of them with Rick's mates Dave? Amorato? and Rhett thingy.

There's enough bandwidth out there for all sorts.
Rhett Shull isn't bad. He does a lot of practical videos that relate to the average player. He is also a gigging musician which tends to give him validation in experiencing a lot of the problems the average player does.

Yep. I like e.g. Pete Thorn but can only take the MTV-style hectic presentation in small doses. 5 Watt World puts me in mind of the ‘90s when you’d come in pissed on a Friday and the only thing left on the box was something from Open University.

It's really hard to take TPS seriously when they now have a ton of pricey vintage gear through Two-Rocks, a wet-dry-wet rig and a pedalboard costing more than a decent used car.

It's not about music, it's about gear acquisition.

And they don't sound any better than when they had the basics and a Mooer Trelicopter.

I like Mick and Dan, nothing against them at all. It does strike me that they go to ever more extravagant and technical lengths to chase a tone that was sorted in the 80s with a nasty old Strat strung with mains cable, a couple of cranked Vibroverbs, and an awful lot of Crown Royal whisky, cocaine, and flamboyant scarves.

It's always been about gear though? It's never been about anything other than messing about with pedals and amps, it's just maybe now their budget is a bit bigger so they can spend more on more expensive gear. I don't think any thing's changed in that regard.

I like 5 Watt World, although I don’t watch all his videos. I do like his summary history videos. I don’t think he would claim to be declaring anything earth shattering in those videos, but they’re nicely summarised if you want an overview of an artist or piece of equipment.

I love TPS, although a dont watch all their videos. I’ve been a fan of Mick’s since long, long before he launched TPS. I do find them a bit much at times, but I find those videos a superb resource - especially if I considering a purchase that they’ve reviewed.

There's being about gear and there's being exclusively about pricey shit.

Amazing that in their whole 'tone journey'  It's almost as if it is a complete coincidence that the only tones they gravitate towards now they are making bank are really expensively purchased ones.

I guess it's the opposite of my own journey through all this stuff where I realised just how brilliant a cheap Boss SD-1 can be and that most 'improvements' to a classic circuit that the baristas who, fed up with ruining coffee now intend to ruin boutique pedals, have come up with, are not objectively improvements.

PS -   I doubt they spend a penny on gear and anything they do purchase is a work expense.

Bit harsh. Mick's happy with a Deluxe Reverb and a Tube Screamer Mini. Or a Hot Rod Deluxe. You sound jealous.

The pedal industry has become a level of weirdness all of its own. Perhaps with the demise of physical media and the ubiquity of compressed content the audiophile anoraks needed some new territory to invade, going one-upmanship at shovelling cash at barely discernible or even imaginary increments of whatever. But the marketing is reassuringly exquisite.

As for 5W world, not for me but I’m happy to ignore it. There’s plenty of well made, informative content online these days.

All that surprises me is the regular validating references from people like McErlain and Beato etc. Doesn’t bother me to assume it’s me that’s missing something. Wouldn’t be the first time.

I've played his vintage Strat and really liked it. If I had the disposable funds I would buy something else though.

As for the rest with amps/pedals I have done the merry go round enough and after wasting a shit ton of money I kind of settled on the things I like, none of which are particularly cheap but not unobtanium either. Each to their own but it was just an observation about where their tastes have led them.

You say Mick's happy with a Deluxe Reverb and a TS Mini, but pretty sure he said he takes a wet/dry rig to a pub gig. I like him by the way but increasingly over the years he has moved further and further away from the sort of sounds I want to cop.

This thread has steered dreadfully off track.  I think it needs to get back to slagging off the bearded man with the monotone verbal delivery rather than chit-chat in first name terms about two jibber-jabbering buffoons on this side of the Atlantic.

That episode when Dan and Mick were masters of their domain, and played without pedals for a weekend; that was strange.

I prefer Baxter and Jonathan at Casino Guitars, because they do not play and they know stuff.

I like 5 watt world, he obviously puts time into his script, edits it to a relatively high standard and has an eye to how it's presented. For me, it's a perfectly pleasant way to spend fifteen minutes while stopping for a cup of tea.

I've enjoyed TPS a lot in the past, I enoy their live streams while I'm making dinner on a Monday, got two T hirts and the D and M drive which I think is wonderful. Over the last couple of years I've found their regular friday afternoon output to be of no use to me. I see this more with the motorcycle channels I watch, as I don't watch much in the way of music GAS content anymore, but the trrend seems to have gone towards longer videos that don't really say very much, and with little thought to production or presentation.

I know most of them are one-person bands, amateurs with no real aptitude for production, but I think when they get to a certain size they really need some outside help in making a show that's actually decent to watch instead of some algorithm feeding snoozefest that prioritises lenght (to maximise 'engagement' and therefore more ads) ahead of actually saying something useful in a shorter space of time. I've got shit to do, don't waste my time!

I was just trying to hype up my PRS SE DGT to a mate who hasnt heard or played it yet and i noticed our own John Cordy has 8 of the most click baity titled videos on the one guitar.
    Maybe he can explain this.
Damn fine playing on his clips by the way.

I think what this thread had highlighted if that there is great potential for awfulness in gear influencer - tube. The problem is that it's very specific to each viewer.

Old 5 watt doesn't bother me per se, but I couldn't watch more  than a few of his history series and I left it at that. Some other mentioned here grind my gears, o lord they do! Equally, If I popped in with the three or so names that I can stand, half of youse would be arranging to have a sick bucket tourbox.
Ten years too late and still getting it wrong

I've sliced my left hand and have stitches so YouTube is the nearest I'll get to a guitar for a while so maybe 5W will be back on the menu :)
