I don't know if this has already been mentioned in the thread yet but in S5E1 when Cersie meets the witch she is told that a younger, more beutiful woman will supersede Cersie. Cersie assumes in season 3-current that this bright young thing is Margery when I think it will be Danearys Targarean whom Cersie hasn't seen coming.

Surely that's already happened and it *was* Margery ? (became Queen, owns Tomen's affections)

  • As someone who hasn't read the books the whole cold hands character thing was entirely lost on me though.

Basically, Sam and Gilly are attacked by wights on their journey south from Craster's Keep to the Wall and are rescued by a masked man in a Night's Watch cloak with black, cold hands (hence the name) who never gives his name or shows his face. They arrive at the Nightfort in time to meet Bran and his gang going north, so Coldhands (who can't pass the wall for some reason) basically turns around and guides Bran north. He's with them when they arrive at the Three-eyed Raven's cave but can't enter there either for some reason (guy can't get a break). He's never heard from again after that, but in the books Bran hasn't left the cave. Yet.

It's heavily implied that the Coldhands is dead and somehow reanimated, but clearly not one of the regular wights under the control of the White Walkers. There's been a fan theory around for quite a while that he's Benjen, but apparenly GRRM has shot this down (see my last post- the text is the original manuscript for A Dance With Dragons, the green pencil is GRRM's editor, the red pen is GRRM).

Apparently the show has decided to mash up the return of Benjen (which hasn't happened in the books but almost certainly will at some point given the number of times Jon and others conveniently wonder what happened to poor uncle Benjen, lost beyond the Wall...) with the Coldhands character, who would have been in series 4 if they were following the books faithfully.

Thankyou for the thorough synopsis! I had already heard a much briefer version (previously rescued Sam and Gilly, then guides Bran North, some kind of white walker with personality and humanity left) but that fills in a lot of gaps.

You're welcome. As with a lot of stuff in the books there's not much concrete information about exactly
what Coldhands is beyond what I've already said- at some point he was a Ranger, now he's dead but still walking around, but not one of those wights. Other theories suggest he was under the control of the Three Eyed Raven, who in the books was a former Lord Commander of the Night's Watch who travelled north for some reason, presumably with an escort. Coldhands may have been one of them.

They've omitted the backstory for the Three Eyed Raven on the show and included a couple of details that contradict what's in the books, but in the books he's Bloodraven, or Brynden Rivers

    "When it's done"

    -GRRM

I check from time to time and all that's out there is clickbait bullshit at the moment.

The last thing of any substance was just after the new year when GRRM admitted that he'd finally realized that the show was going to overtake the books (no shit, George) and that he'd blown several deadlines at the tail end of last year that would have seen Winds of Winter out in time for GOT series 6.

So yeah, don't hold your breath.

...and I'm definitely a third rate ASOIAF fanboi.

    Just a thought.

    Is Samwell Tarly, Azor Ahoi?

    Hmm...

It would be kind of a fantasy trope if it turned out that the fat, useless character was actually the hero and not the hunky warrior type.

The "Azor Ahai reborn" thing is alluded to a lot, but we never actually hear the prophecy itself, at least not in full (maybe if/when we do it'll make it obvious who it is, hence holding it back). We get the line about being born amidst salt and smoke (Renly: Is he a ham?) and the story about how the original Azor Ahai tempered his sword by stabbing his wife with it (classy), but no real way to identify the person who is Azor Ahai reborn.

I suspect Samwise... er, Samwell ends up as one of the heroes of the piece, although not necessarily the hero.

  • A fairly sedate episode, but brooding and full of things to come.

Next couple should be pretty full on I'd hope.

the waif's instructions were that she must not suffer.   I suspect that the waif has failed and will experience some consequences with "the girl" being saved and sent on a further quest.

I thought that it was actually a pretty good episode.

Of course, the resurrection of my favourite GOT character helped :) And there was Lovejoy!
