Hmmm... I get slightly irate every episode this series about the fact that it has diverged so far from the books. But making Stannis do that! Outrage!

And yes, the dragon CGI was toe-curlingly bad.

Not so sure - the last book left Stannis and his army stuck in the snow - it may well be coming in the next book.

Reports suggest GRRM told the TV guys that he was planning on having Stannis do the same, eventually. tbh they've run out of books, so they're making their own headway. I don't mind at all- it's great TV. Just hope the eventual payoff is worth it.

Yeah I've not read the books I can understand why people might get pissed off with them deviating but if it's a choice of something different or nothing, I'd take the different option. I'd try to view them as separate things too, that might calm me down a bit. I'll probably read them in a few years after the TV finishes.

For me - they haven't deviated that far from the books - skipped over some details but that's inevitable I would think.  I'm more amazed how well they have captured the spirit of the books and love them both.

None of them have "wandered off" in the books, all three you mention are present right up to the end of the published books, they just might not get the same prominence as some of the other characters. A few minor characters might be accused of "wandering off"- Hot Pie,Gendry and Edric Storm for instance, but the only reasonably major character this can really be said for is Sandor Clegane, who might actually be given a very neat little send-off in A Feast For Crows when Brienne meets the Septon on the Quiet Isle...

I don't mind them diverging from the books as they have been on a downward trajectory since the third book. I think the TV series is an improvement

 Martin needs to get the next book out right now - another year before we find out what happens next is too long!

The return of the big hill, not quite right, in this episode

another red priest turning up in the right place just before said event

Old head of the nights watch turning up a bit different in previous episode

Mentions of Benjen Stark - presumed dead and revived???

at this point in the books you also have lady stoneheart and reports of the hound being alive... or just somebody wearing his helmet, and a lot more talk of that character Benjen whose name we have just been reminded of

so dead don't mean dead at this point.  Ot it might mean dead, but it don't mean out of the game...  but it is GRRM so if anyone is dead its probably the person you least want to be

Just to echo, FUUUCK!!!

Nice way to end the season though, Arya getting getting all stabby was great, a few not entirely unexpected deaths, naked Lena, Stannis getting his just deserts after last week. Good to see Lord Varys back too.

Only another 10 months to go 'til the next one, aarrrrgggghhhh!!!!!
