If you are serious about monitors, I'd avoid the guitar/keyboard megastore type places and go strictly serious pro audio.., Funky Junk / KMR / SX pro.
Proper pro audio retailers will ship you demo monitors in your space. IMHO reading other people's opinions on the net is basically worthless.
The main thing is how the monitors interact in your listening space. Spending a fortune on good monitors when your room is a mess of nulls, standing waves etc is money down the drain.
