Tremolo pedals??

Does anyone have a tremolo recommendation - something capable of really gated and squared off waveforms, maybe even with pulse-width control ???

I'm looking at the EQD Hummingbird, but wondering if I am overlooking anything?

Looking for single-stomp form factor.

  • I love my Twin Peaks Tap Tremolo. Ticks the boxes you mentioned, except that it's slightly wider than a single Boss enclosure.

Mooer Trelicopter? Not sure it has everything you're after but the bias control really makes a difference to the sounds you can get out of it. Small and cheap too.

The Suhr jack rabbit has various waveshapes and can go very extreme with rates etc. It also does hard square waves etc.

I'm pondering selling mine if you're interested.

Oh, and I'd love it to have expression pedal input too - sorry forgot to add that!

Basically I'd like to control the pulse-width and rate of the trem effect from an LFO (looking like I might get the Source Audio Reflex controller) so that I can play along and have the tremolo auto-sweep it's settings across four or more bars, whilst also being sample and held by the EHX Super Ego.

Drew, it's not maybe as versatile as you'd like but the Monster Effects Swamp Thang is the most droolsome trem ever. The big box one is slightly better. It really is Fender trem in a pedal.

In which case I think the EQD is your best bet.

I don't really want Fender trem in a box tbh. I want something that is going to be useful sound-design wise... for making textures rather than apeing classic surf sounds or whatever.

Currently the EQD Hummingbird is winning.

Gig-fx Chopper? Bigger than you want I know, but it is its own expression pedal so it will save space overall.

I know someone selling one if you're interested.

Yeah bit too big fella. Coz it's going to sit in the loop of the EHX SuperEgo I just bought, it really needs to be a single stomp pedal. I may just go with the EQD coz it sounds good. It doesn't do a true square wave but it does sound choppy enough to be more of a slicer or gate effect.

I can't believe there isn't a square-wave tremolo pedal out there with control over the pulse-width. Other than the one @djspecialist linked. That is nuts!

the humming bird is a remake of the vox repeater, which has a very particular wave shape. not a regular sine, triangle, or square, but a vertical attack and a quick drop off, which gives it a very light and fluttery quality. it wouldn't really work well as a regular sine wave trem or as choppy stuttery. it's something apart.

maybe try the demeter tremulator (johnny greenwood used one) of which there are a few cheap clones if your budget is tight (mooer do the trelicopter and donner probably have a clone). check out 'lucky' by radiohead to hear it.

common sound's 'tremulus lune' or culture jam's 'shoot the moon' tremolo have pulse-width and more besides, but they are pcb builds not buys. but if a builder here has one they don't want, or can give you a build price that comes in under budget, you may get one. that's the only tremolo i have that covers the criteria you have given.

the humming bird/vox repeater doesn't have any pulse width control, and only one very particular wave form. tbh it sounds exactly wrong for your stated requirements. but if your ears like it, trust your ears.

That's exactly why I mentioned the Chopper :).

I have to say the reason I haven't bought it off him is the size of the thing, though…

The Tremulus Lune is a very versatile tremolo. IIRC, it has control over the pulsewidth too. I made one for a friend ages ago and liked it a lot. I know there are kits for it, no it not sure whether you can get one pre-built.

I know it doesn't meet your size constraints, but I would think this is a perfect use case for a Boss Slicer which has exp in and various patterns. It even does MIDI.

Tremulus Lune is the way to go, I spent ages lusting over one, back when I actually played guitar.

The Zvex Sonar and Tremorama look pretty cool - no expression, though

For bigger sizes, the EHX Super Pulsar is about everything you could want in a trem

Have you looked at the Dr Scientist Tremolessence?

Could be right up your street!

Or if you don't mind about footprint size or cost, my favourite overkill trem is the Lightfoot labs Goatkeeper.

I've had the flint and the jack rabbit and can honestly say they are awesome. I only sold them because I use my mobius for my Trem sounds now
