Foreign cab dilemma- what would you have done here?

What's Hot

On the weekend I caught a cab from Rome airport- a massive Mercedes van thing.
I had it all to myself on the trip into central Rome.

Going around a corner the cabbie hit a Smart car- that was parked on the corner of the street I was staying in.
There was a bit of damage to the smart car- mostly just one panel was scraped.

When I got out of the cab the cabbie was checking his own car- which was dented but otherwise fine.
He drove off.

So... what would you have done in this situation?
Would it have changed depending upon which country you were in?

    That's incredible!

Not that he just drove off - that he stopped to check for damage.

    Rome ...
Having trouble posting images here?  This might help.

Sorry, I don't understand the dilemma .... what was the problem. The taxi driver drove off?

Remember, it's easier to criticise than create!

Sorry, I thought it was obvious.
Would you have left a note on the car telling them who hit your car?
I was using Uber Black, so I have the license plate etc.

    Would you have left it?
Would you have reported it to the cab company (in this case Uber)?

He checked his own car- not the one he hit.

  • They have History tho - Caesars boys never apologised for causing damage. look what they did to Russell Crowes wife and son? I didnt see any notes there either

Tricky one. The moral part of me says, yeah I'd definitely dob the driver in. If it was actually me in the same position though I'd probably just ignore it and then post about it on a guitar forum

I assumed the Smartcar was being driven.

Report him to Uber (after you've left Rome) .. :-)

I've stayed in Rome - the standard of driving is really poor so maybe that's what people expect.

I'd want to do something but wouldn't because of anxiety and then just feel guilty and punish myself

I did wonder if this was 'normal for Rome'- most cars seem to have some sort of damage on them, the streets are narrow etc.

Driver would know you'd dobbed him...would reduce your Uber passenger rating. I didn't know about this until recently.....Check out Help> Account & Payment > Account Settings & Ratings > I'd like to know my rating

If it was a 1969 Dodge Charger he hit, definitely, in fact I wouldn't have even let him drive off as I'd of taken the keys.  Being that it was a Smart car, well it wouldn't really bother me either way.

I think I would have reported it. If it was my car that was hit, I'd be pissed if someone drove off.

I'm a believer in karma so I think I would say something.

I thought New York was bad until I went to Rome. Driving over there is one big clusterfuck. I saw a Lambo parked up when I went there, but it was parked fully on the pavement (he'd driven up the dropped kerb). You can kind of understand why.

I also saw a car parked sideways on the apex of a corner at a crossroads :)

I can't help about the shape I'm in, I can't sing I ain't pretty and my legs are thin

But don't ask me what I think of you, I might not give the answer that you want me to

Christ man, its Rome, that sort of thing is part and parcel of driving there. By and large, they don't care a toss (I've been working in Rome on and off for the last few years, love the place).

I wouldn't give it a second thought. They don't care, you shouldn't. Really.

Can't you swap the plastic panels on a smart car in 30 seconds with a penknife or something? I would imagine the damage done to the smart car was below the insurance threasold. ;-)

Seriously next time you got to Rome or any part of Italy, try to find a car that hasn't been dented, you'll struggle.
