... actually Freebird is my favourite, hands down. It's old, it's crusty, but when I actually give it a spin, it hasn't dated anymore than I have.
I still love that track too - and it hasn't dated any more than I have either:

Probably still one of my fav guitar solos (beautifully crafted) and outro's of all time is by Tony Peluso who played guitar on The Carpenters 'Goodbye to Love'.  It may be an oldie (1972) but it still evokes such a strong emotional response in me even 45 yrs on & I still think its pure class and hard to beat.  And as for Karen's truly beautiful voice & wonderful clear diction, what a sad, sad loss - taken from us way before her time.

Theres a reason Freebird fades... somewhere in a studio in the Deep South, there's a guitarist still wailing away playing the same three phrases over and over again and nobody has the heart to tell him that the track has finished and has been released.

Wisdom for Seahorses- That's such a good track, I fondly remember tying my fingers in knots trying to work it out when I was in High School.

Re Freebird, sod the guitars, Artemis Pyle's performance on that is mindblowing. It's probably my favourite single piece of drumming ever- the single handed tom rolls are bloody amazing.

Cantellone is a great drummer but no-one grooves like Art

Here's the original: the way Pyle controls the solos is a lesson in itself.

It's like 'Pi' isn't it - unresolvable & goes on forever. D More than 3 phrases though, and not easy to play convincingly especially as its a double lead solo with Gary Rossington & Allen Collins (live, but Allen Collins only on the studio album, double tracked), uses pretty much the whole fretboard (it starts right up there doesn't it!) and EQ'd on the studio version for that full sound.  I love the bit at 3:18 when they played live and Allen Collins jumps up in the air towards the end with legs spread akimbo! That's rock'n roll!  Tried that myself live once or twice when I was younger - not easy...I got away with it, but more luck than judgement!!  Not nowadays though.

For those that might be interested to read the article & hear the pure solo 'isolated' (L&R channels), here it is:

@Voxman - probably have to agree with you regarding Goodbye To Love and Karen - she was barely out of her teen years when singing most of those hits

@ESblonde - after reading the header to this blog, I started to think what would I pick - couldn't think of anything then saw your comments on The Chain and thought yes I agree - end of !!!!

I always turn that up as it fades just to hear every last note.

I believe it actually went on much longer than made it onto the record.

Not strictly a solo, but I love the last bit on Get Back - when they pick it up and groove out with Billy Preston leading the way
