The CEO's initial response appears to have been rather ill-advised... to say the least.
After talks of boycotts by Asian customers, he appears to have changed his tone somewhat. China appears to be an important market for United (I've read that they claim that they operate more US-China flights to more Chinese cities than any other US carrier).

Apparently there's a shitstorm about it in China (the guy they removed is Chinese).
I guess there's a whole bunch of lawyers queuing up to represent the victim in a lawsuit.
In many cases, the compensation culture appears to be a bad thing... but, in cases like this, I suspect a large lump of compensation may be one of the few things that some corporations understand. A large payout could be a good way of changing behaviour.
