He didn’t seem to have been at the school when the shooting started, arriving some minutes later. If he had been there he may well have been the first victim. No doubt an inquiry will determine the facts. Whatever, he is now branded a coward by President Trump.

He probably just had a 'foot thing'.
Also, if a 'law-abiding' citizen decides to go on a shooting spree, how easy would it be for them to buy guns from criminals?
Very weak excuse. Criminals in the UK can get their hands on guns, but we still have far fewer mass shootings because the effort and connections needed to get a gun means you can't just shoot a group of people when the mood takes you.
Criminals breaking in to houses in the states carry guns because a) they are easy to get and b) because there is a good chance the the homeowner is armed.
When everyone can have a gun they are no longer a deterrent, the criminals need to make sure they have more or bigger guns, which becomes a vicious circle.
(There are two parts)
I can't ever recall any "good guy with a gun" scenes where a random bystander saves the day... I wonder if it ever happens?

Now that's a bit unfair because, as @fob already reminded us, President Trump (aka Donald-Duck-The-Draft) had a 'foot thing'
They're really not like us are they?
It's actually about time their bluff was called - their spokesman complained about them being "attacked". If the majority of Americans stood up and said, yes we are attacking you - because you're an at best amoral organisation which uses its money and influence to override the wishes of the majority of the people who *do* want tighter gun controls, perhaps things would change.
If businesses are starting to boycott them it could be beginning to happen.

Looks like the Florida governor will try to at least get the ownership age up from 18 to 21 - as you said, it's a start.
The tactic of using social media to target companies with business links with the NRA seems to be having some small effect. If it can be intensified and sustained over a long period it might, just might, start to weaken the NRA so that those with influence cease to be intimidated by them. Is that just wishful thinking?
Incidentally, NBC today reported that not only the SRO but also three other deputies from the same police dept remained outside the school while the shooting was in progress. They are said to have had guns drawn but they stayed behind their vehicles. Is it perhaps normal in these situations to await the arrival of heavily armed SWAT teams? Surely there have been enough of these school massacres for there to be a national rapid response procedure in place?
