I did go to a wedding where the reception was cheese and crackers themed ( the wedding cake was a cheese, really) but this seemed to largely consist of pork pie and bread rolls for some reason.
I'd avoid cheese with fruit in, that's very hoi polloi. If you invited me I'd eat all the goats cheese.
My colleagues in France genuinely didn't know that the rest of the world made cheese, thinking that it was a French thing and that we all ate theirs. (Hey, chauvinism is a French word...)
I imported a wheel of Keen's Farm cheddar and they all thought it was the best thing they'd ever had with red wine.
All that said, you'll still need to go to Waitrose and just buy all the cheeses you've never heard of to keep the partygoers happy.
As for cheeses, I'd go for contrasts - Taleggio for soft and maybe Jarlsberg or smoked Gouda for hard.
