The best singer who is primarily known as a guitarist?

What's Hot

For me it would be Richie Kotzen. He was known primarily as a hot young guitarist for the 90s decade, but then it turns out that he has an amazingly soulful and powerful voice.

Anyone else with a surprisingly good voice?

And a the risk of being a tad cruel, the guitarist who should definitely NOT sing! My vote goes to Joe Satriani ...

Having said on here that Robert Cray was one of the best live singers I’ve ever seen so probably him. Although I’m not sure he counts for this question.
Michael Anthony has a very good singing voice if mostly BVs ( I think he takes some of the lines for Chickenfoot rather than just harmonies).

Nils Lofgren. Really like his solo stuff and he has a whimsical musicality to his vocals.

Phil X for sure. His cover of Highway Star is fantastic!

I'm assuming Myles Kennedy doesn't count...?

Ritchie Sambora was the best singer in Bon Jovi until Phil X joined.

EDIT: @Jason beat me to it.

It's one of my standard answers, but I'd say Tommy Shaw although he was always one of the lead vocalists in Styx in addition to guitar duties.  JY is a pretty good singer too.

In a similar-ish vein, Rik Emmett.  Again he always did lead vocals as well as guitar, but he's a really, really good singer.

    Also Dave Meniketti from Y&T.

I'll agree with @axisus on Richie Kotzen.  I already had his first instrumental album then when the second one, Fever Dream, came out it was like wow, this guy can sing as well!

Maybe not outstanding singers, but I always liked Gary Moore's and SRV's vocals too.

Peter Green, his singing was just as soulful as his playing.
Tomorrow will be a good day.

    Steve Miller.
Jimi Hendrix, mainly coz he didn't believe he was much good as a singer.

    Paul Gilbert, for sure.

I've heard a couple of tracks that Steve Vai has sung on and he's not got a bad voice either... although I'm not sure he'd call himself a singer.
Too much gain... is just about enough \m/

He'd never be held up as a great singer, but I like Joe Walsh's voice – it's very him, if that makes sense. Bags of personality.
