  • I liked BB8's impression of a repair droid.

  • Did the Holdo suicide run literally rip Snoke's ship in two? I watched it in 2D again yesterday and tried to see what it does to the normal Star destroyers.

It looked that way to me. I doubt there's a sensible scientific explanation for how it was supposed to have happened, but it appeared that all the ships were cut in half in roughly the direction Holdo's ship was travelling.

A total mess. But a very entertaining kids film. They are so stuck, so limited in what the Star Wars universe can or ever will represent to an audience that the next film basically writes itself. The galaxy's greatest hacker... who they don't even meet... to sneak aboard a ship and open a door. Jesus wept. I enjoyed watching it, though, but can't imagine watching it again. 3 bellends out of 5.

  • Went to see it yesterday. On the whole, a thoroughly enjoyable way to spend 2.5 hours in a darkened room (other ways are also available). But, in the cold light of day, it doesn't deserve too much analysis.

There are credibility issues like the bombers in space - where the bombs had forgotten that they need gravity to drop to the target and the sister found herself in a bomb bay with doors open to vacuum yet didn't die there and then.

The credibility issue doesn't and shouldn't apply to anything "Force-related" because that is one of the major premises of the whole series - we suspend disbelief so the Force can drive the narrative and plots. But bombers?...

This film displayed a lack of new ideas and much recycling of old ones. If you hadn't seen any others (unlikely for most of us) then maybe you didn't mind yet another one-to-one showdown finale duel, or the "out of the blue" appearance at just the right time, (again) of the Falcon, or the casino scenes that looked just like a polished version of the scuzzy bar from the first film, or a dark ex-Jedi remotely strangling a colleague to establish dominance.

I thought the best acting came from Mark Hamill and Andy Serkis. Most of the characters were dreadfully stereotyped and the actors performed accordingly - doing it well, but a bit one-dimensional. Adam Driver was a hit and miss - very believable when in conflict with himself and not so much when totally in control of things. I think my problem is I loved his performance in Paterson and this wasn't it.

But...  none of this stopped me from enjoying the film at the time, despite the holes. Well shot, great CGI and you don't have to think too hard - in fact, that is a disadvantage...

Agreed, bombs in space was silly, but we've long since established that in the SW universe it's possible to have openings in to space with some sort of shielding that maintains gravity and atmosphere while allowing objects to pass through.

Well, fair enough about the open bomb doors...  :-)

Yep, pretty much sums up my thoughts on this film and the whole Star Wars saga. It's daft, fun suspend-your-disbelief sci fi. I really don't get why some people get so wrapped up in it, thinking it's on the same philosophical level as something like Blade Runner/2046. Open any of the Star Wars films up to too much deep analysis and the whole thing falls apart instantly, just enjoy it for the ride.

I had a discussion with a mate last night who's a proper Star Wars nerd. I was expecting him to be gushing about how good it was, like most of the reviews were. However, he was devastated! Said it had 'ruined' Star Wars for him, started going on about how it should have all fitted in the wider Jedi universe and how it missed the mark, and going on about all the plot holes, inconsistencies in character development, lack of philosophical weight blah blah blah...

I just told him to get a grip - he's a 40 year old bloke watching what is essentially a kid's film, don't take it so bloody seriously!

I think you're confusing ET with Star Wars. The latter is a long-running story with a single universe and its own canon. The canon wasn't invented by the fans, it is (was?) guarded by Lucas.

If Rian Johnson found that canon annoying, he could have asked to direct Spaceballs 2 instead.

I don't think anything in TLJ goes against canon. It shows extra stuff that wasn't in the original movies, but doesn't contradict it.

    It's only a movie...

yeah, that was pretty spot on.

I have spent the past 18 months reading Star Wars books.  not all of them, there are just too many, but i started with at the old republic and am now at the stage of Lukes Jedi academy.  That guy is totally right about it being safe and predictable.  The main characters are pretty much untouchable and undeveloped from the George Lucas vision

I love Star Wars, but I have read three books (four actually, forgot about one I read when I was about 18) considered amongst the best, and they were shit. I watch the films, I don't care about shoddy expansions which if anything, tend to detract from the legacy rather than support it (in my opinion!). So I can't understand how people can use some juxtaposition between the books and the films, to criticise the films.

Some of the new books are pretty good. Like Aftermath or Ashoka.  Many of the old ones are terrible.

the cartoons are still the best tie ins.  Clone wars had brief moments of greatness.  Rebels more so.

The bit that confused me was after the fight with Snoke/Kylo how the hell did Rey make it back to the falcon so easily, for me there was a whole escape scene missing - or did I drop off for 5 mins?

I heard a lot of that was cut to reduce length of film, but will be included on blueray

The best books I've read in the Expanded Universe are the Admiral Thrawn ones and the alien invasion series (can't remember what it's called) with Jacen Solo. I kind of wished that Thrawn would have been included in the First Order somehow - he's such an awesome character.
