We've obviously not learned the lesson about slagging vendors off then. Peach ended up leaving last year which was a mighty shame. So let's not be like that again.

Checked the website and some very reasonable prices tbh, not only can you get an amazing instrument but it’s not a bad investment considering the enjoyment factor

Well i absolutely loved the show, god those guitars were really nice, i mean i even liked the fenders which didn't sound much like the modern ones to my ears, I've played a 52 tele and 62 strat that's about it but they had necks more like I'm used on vintage gibsons

My favs were the 53 goldtop and 55 custom, they sounded fantastic imo and I'd love to have a chat to Mike and talk about the finishes etc, alot of the relic stuff i see is nothing like realistic from ones I've personally seen and played

What is it with middle aged guitar shop owners and bad hair?!
Probably the same as millennials and bad tatts/beards.

I think that the 'by appointment' policy is not only practical, but desirable for the visitor. I've visited, and bought, several guitars from Mike, and I'll do so again (when I do my next bank hold-up, of course). Mike's often away buying guitars, and for that - and several other levels - it's not going to be advisable to have a 'walk-in' policy, not without keeping the guitars under lock and key, of course.

The 'appointment' policy means that a person contemplating buying something pretty specialist and - let's face it - expensive gets time devoted to them exclusively, the chance to look at and to try out a variety of iconic guitars, and all without the distraction of other customers, browsing, nosing and playing guitars in the same room. The time that you spend there is all yours. I much prefer that - any other way just wouldn't be practical there.

I don't always buy, but Mike makes it very easy for me to do so - and I'm not well-heeled by any stretch of the imagination, I just like vintage guitars a lot. There's no pressure, just coffee, biscuits and a chat about guitars and stuff. I try not to comment on people that I don't know, only people that I've had dealings with, which seems to me to be a reasonable approach.

Anyway, it can't be elitist if he lets me in.

  • Whilst I'd love the opportunity to be condemnatory I thought this was a good vid. I have no idea if the guitars sound better than modern ones, some of them sounded great, as did the amp btw. I just like old stuff of all sorts. I can completely see why the shop owner runs the business by appointment, others have given additional reasons I hadn't thought of. Also great that he has said you can go just to look round, I'd enjoy that, but much too far away.
I also admire the two guys from TPS, between them they have a lot of indepth knowledge & I assume they're making a living doing something they're really enthusiastic about- more than I can say. I appreciate I don't know anything about them as people, but they seem fine.

    A bit late to this.

I never usually watch youtube guitar stuff but I must admit I loved seeing those vintage guitars and the listening to the depth of knowledge from the proprietor of ATB.

I am a fan of Fender history and seeing together that green korina and faded fiesta that was Eric Johnson's - wow.

Looking from an arty perspective, those things are mid century modern antiques - just beautiful.

    That was great.

It reminded me a lot of a trip to Chicago Music Exchange, which lasted for several hours. For some reason, CME accepted that I was a genuine buyer and gave me a free run of the vintage Gibsons.
On that day, I was asking myself: But where are the golden era Gibsons that are "just OK"??
I have found one or two over the years - of course I have - but they were the crazy collectable models that "cannot be refretted" or "cannot have worn pots repaired or replaced".
Hopefully Joe B has helped to change that somewhat....

Towards the end of the clip, one of them is saying, something like, these are great vintage guitars, but all vintage guitars may not be great. (See my comment above).
Er.....no. These are not great vintage guitars.
These guitars are the ATB stock. On the day that you visited.
The ones that were sold during the previous 2 weeks were presumably even better?

Of course I am biased and some of you  have views which are different. That is why this is a great forum.

Well there isn't evidence that actively disproves the idea that old guitars sound different to new ones so it's not quite as insane as religion.

The notion that the tone on old guitars is "deeper" rather than just different seems odd though. Can't really think what that could actually mean.

Would be enjoyable to have someone who believes in that, hand them a bunch of guitars, not telling them whether each is old or new, and having them be able to tell from the depth of the tone.

I'd be quite strongly expecting a particular result.

Not pretentious at all - it's a commercial reality when you're holding what must be over a million quid's worth of stock, and it allows Mike to give his full attention to each customer.
