My favs were the 53 goldtop and 55 custom, they sounded fantastic imo and I'd love to have a chat to Mike and talk about the finishes etc, alot of the relic stuff i see is nothing like realistic from ones I've personally seen and played
(formerly customkits)
The 'appointment' policy means that a person contemplating buying something pretty specialist and - let's face it - expensive gets time devoted to them exclusively, the chance to look at and to try out a variety of iconic guitars, and all without the distraction of other customers, browsing, nosing and playing guitars in the same room. The time that you spend there is all yours. I much prefer that - any other way just wouldn't be practical there.
I don't always buy, but Mike makes it very easy for me to do so - and I'm not well-heeled by any stretch of the imagination, I just like vintage guitars a lot. There's no pressure, just coffee, biscuits and a chat about guitars and stuff. I try not to comment on people that I don't know, only people that I've had dealings with, which seems to me to be a reasonable approach.
Anyway, it can't be elitist if he lets me in.
All these guitar should be burnt in a big ceremonial bonfire protest against elitism
I never usually watch youtube guitar stuff but I must admit I loved seeing those vintage guitars and the listening to the depth of knowledge from the proprietor of ATB.
I am a fan of Fender history and seeing together that green korina and faded fiesta that was Eric Johnson's - wow.
Looking from an arty perspective, those things are mid century modern antiques - just beautiful.
The notion that the tone on old guitars is "deeper" rather than just different seems odd though. Can't really think what that could actually mean.
Would be enjoyable to have someone who believes in that, hand them a bunch of guitars, not telling them whether each is old or new, and having them be able to tell from the depth of the tone.
I'd be quite strongly expecting a particular result.
