I'm with those who don;t like this challenge. I think writing music like this is artistically bankrupt and just encourages pointless widdling rather than actually writing songs. I did consider entering a protest entry that was either spoken word or a drum solo or something like that but not sure I can be arsed :D
I would normally agree, but having heard some of the entries I can they they are very much real songs and very good ones at that.

Oi! I did manage to fit some pointless widdling in at the end!! :D

Well after a bit of a false start I've finally got something down. Now just need to give it a final check over for any forbidden notes, but all in all I've had fun doing this because it's made me think quite hard.

    Nice one.
    :-bd

I played a bum note on my outro solo in E minor pentatonic - luckily it was one of the 'permitted' notes!
    :)

In the art of zen guitar if you play a bum note you just play it again with more feeling as though you meant it ;-)

Bmaj7, Gmaj7, Ebmaj7 would have been similar to Coltrane's reversed augmented Major thirds.
(I believe, Coltrane got the pattern from Nicolas Slonimsky's Thesaurus of Scales and Melodic Patterns.)

It could be simplified to four bars, with linking 7th chords:

    | BMaj7  D7 | GMaj7  Bb7  | Ebmaj7 F# 7 | BMaj7 |

    or a bit more modern

    |  BMaj7  | F#7sus GMaj7 | D7sus Ebmaj7| Bb7sus |

I had a lot of fun with this in the end. The final result sounds a bit 'muzak' but I kinda like it :)

I think I'm timed out (again) to get anything proper done.

    :(

However, just to prove that I have actually attempted something this time around, this is as far as I managed to get ...

Anyone have experience of recording on an iPad? The graphics card on my recording pc died on Friday night and I'm having to send it back to Overclockers tomorrow. Could be up to 28 working days before I get a replacement :x
My only other option to get something done before the deadline is my iPad. I know garagebands on there but I've never used it. I've also got a peavey ampkit link I bought for my iphone years ago and never really used so I assume it'll work with the iPad ok.

Anyone got any tips for recording on an iPad before I have a go later?

Really??  It sounds completely different in my head when I've added some bass & drums!  Still, that's not going to get done anytime soon, so I'll enter it as-is.

I did mine on an iPad, using Garageband and a cheap interface.  I did use JamUp Pro for the guitar sound, but the various options in Garageband are quite effective too.  Once you get into using it, it becomes quite intuitive ... sooner you start ...

  • @TTony yeah I think its really cool personally, I usually imagine songs without bass and drums anyway so it fits in with my brain.

I suggest a 'Monster Riffs' challenge: submit a riff, any style, no restrictions other than max length 8 bars. Adding bass/drums etc optional.

This Friday, BBC4 are showing a documentary called 'The Joy of the Guitar Riff', so this could provide inspiration :)

That's going to make it a little more difficult.

    @mellowsun - like the riff idea ...

I've had a major disaster and lost everything .... my own bloody fault ..  :-(

I'll see what I can knock up in 24 hours ...
