  • Long overdue update:

The house move has obviously slowed down in all the C19 shenanigans, but today we signed the contract, and should be exchanging and completing (on the same day) in a matter of days.

As I'm furloughed now, I'm looking forward to a few weeks of being paid 80% of my wages to decorate a new house and make significant progress on the studio.

Step by step photos, and possibly time lapse video, to come! Woohoo!

Expect a thermonuclear war when you post your plans for 2021... ;)

Glad things are still moving forwards though mate :)

    Congratulations on signing the contract.

I guess the timing is a double edged sword.  You've got time to do work but harder to get materials during lockdown.  I remember that when we moved into this house, which was a new build so an empty shell, I took a week off work and found myself visiting B&Q so often that I thought I was going to get an invite to their Christmas party.  In fact I was alternating between two of their stores so it didn't appear to their staff that I was visiting as often as I did.

    Good luck with it all.

Oh, good news indeed. I'd thought all of this was going to be down the toilet what with Corona and so on. Glad to know it's still happening, albeit a touch more awkward.

I assume you'll also be building a suitable extension to house any forthcoming northern get-togethers?

  • That's very exciting, out of interest how do you ventilate it, guessing a few musicians in a sealed room might require some air conditioning?

It'll have a low level and high level vent, with baffle boxes on the outside of the building to reduce noise leakage.

About bloody time!  Allowing a major worldwide pandemic to slow down your posting on this thread was hardly acceptable ;)

  • We're underway!

    Well...I've started spending money.

I know own a shit load of timber and 20 bales of 100mm rockwool batts.

I'm picking up the cable and electrical fixtures next week along the wiring diagram drawn by my tame sparky.

This morning I ordered a 75mm thick acoustic, steel 13pt locking door.

That's the most expensive door I've ever bought!

Today I started the not at all exciting or guitar geek friendly job of clearing shite out of the building.

The guy who used to own this house has kept every single piece of wood he has ever owned! I'm convinced that after every new purchase or project up in the house, he just chucked the old stuff in the bottom garage to keep 'er indoors happy!

Possibly to spite her, he then apparently screwed everything to the wall or to something else that was already screwed to the wall. Sometimes he couldn't find a screw, so he used a nail or bolt. Undoing this lot took me friggin hours!

The one saving grace from my day was the releasing of this beautiful old work bench, which I'm tempted to keep for guitar maintenance even though it would take up lots of space

The clearing continues, but things have started to arrive and the studio build proper starts on Monday.

My favourite thing so far is the inner door, kindly donated by @Sasquatch_Bob as he is moving to another studio.

Many a fretboarder has walked through this door, which used to separate the infamous studio 1 from Bob's recording room.

I will be keeping this exactly as it is in honour of a place so many of us know and love!

Keep it if you can, definitely would come in useful. Save you buying a new ‘posh’ one down the line.

Today was the first day of things really coming together, and this week will be a breakneck speed attempt to get the vast majority of the work done. By the end of it we should have just the plastering and finishing to do.

Most of the materials, both regular and specialist, have arrived.

I've got wood! (and plasterboard, multifinish, screws...)

A very heavy door arrived at the back lane this morning (fortunately!) which saved us lugging it down the entire grounds of the house and down several sets of steps!

The existing distro board was hacked off the wall and binned...because holy hell, how did the previous owner not die of an electric shock?!

Moved most of the materials inside and finished removing the other crap that the previous owner had bolted / screwed / nailed / welded / gaffa taped to the walls

Removed the mechanism to the door and bolted it shut with some seriously heavy duty coach bolts

We finished the day with a full inventory check of the steel security door, ready to fit it first thing tomorrow. This thing is a beast!

...and a final little job, brushing down the wall below the window ready for a coat of tanking slurry tomorrow.

Busy day! Back to it tomorrow :D
