One technique will be banished from guitar history which is it?

Indiscriminate vibrato. An astute term I first read in an interview with Alan Murphy many many years ago who was a master of controlled expressive pitch bend. I really dislike the kind of pitch wobbling that bears little relationship to musical context.

Thankfully indiscriminate vibrato isn't heard so much these days, so hopefully it will be largely banished to the past.
‘Great vibrato’ used to be held as the mark of a good guitarist in the days when blues-rock-derived styles were king, to the exclusion of just about anything else - for many it became purely a mechanical, rote technique that had no musical value.

That’s why I like John Frusciante’s playing so much - he rarely uses any at all.

    Can we keep Roy Buchanan?
    No.

But pinch harmonics are fine in the right context .

One not mentioned yet - ‘flicking’ the whammy bar on a Floyd Rose.

Using that plastic tube in the mouth thingy that blends guitar with your voice. Just the most rubbish effect ever.
I play guitar because I enjoy it rather than because I’m any good at it

Crap nervous sounding vibrato while moving the neck, usually goes with extreme gurning face.

I do that for giggles, but on a Gotoh 510. It's still on a Charvel though. :)

Bending strings down instead of up, really fucking annoys me for some reason
Hey I do that, hopefully not too much though.
I think I would say divebombs from the list, it was cool in the 80s but beyond passé now.
    Don't touch that dial.

If you are including Ionian and Aeolian that's going to be quite tricky.

Are we going to all switch to the whole tone scale?

I was thinking about a guitar playing thing that irks me the other day, which is plucking the strings REALLY HARD all the time. I just hate that sound, that awful quack. All attack, no tone to speak of and nowhere to go but quieter. It sounds equally bad on electric and acoustic. Boink! Boink!

By all means, use it as an effect if you must (no, don't!) but not all the time, please.

    There. I said it.
My wife asked me to stop singing Wonderwall.

For flutter effect ? I actually like that in moderation, it's just another articulation as far as I'm concerned.
Personally the only one I don't like is dive bombs, it's just not very musical and a bit pointless

If you could just ban the hammering-on and pulling-off that the instagram neo-soul kids do that makes every phrase sound like one of those wannabes singing the american national anthem, that'd be great.
