All the love here for Mogwai and Frightened Rabbit - you need to know the band that had all of both in their music....

I really loved Aerogramme's albums!!! Haven't listened to them for a while actually, will crack some of that out tomorrow, good reminder!

    Bye!

    Noted for their classic songs:

    Pick up the Pieces

    Let's go Round Again

    Show Your Hand
Only a Fool Would Say That.

  • Three of my top five favourite bands (Cocteaus, Boards Of Canada and Teenage Fanclub) are from north of the border. For a small country, (population wise) Scotland punches well above it's weight musically.

My wife asked me to stop singing Wonderwall.
    I said maybe.....

Looking at all of the bands named above it strikes me how many of them are from the 80s onwards and how few, compared to the lists of "best bands", come from the 60s and 70s. I wonder how much of that is due to the demographics of the forum and how much to the actual music.

  • The Blue Nile - funnily enough, I’m in the Highlands right now.

I was in Glasgow last year and met P J Moore who used to play keyboards in TBN. I’d have loved to have spent more time with him - a real musical hero of mine.

    Thin Lizzie (Brian Robertson)

I think we are bit by bit over different Discussions making the claim that Thin Lizzy came from most corners of the world. Formed by three Irish guys one of whom was born in England but of Guianan descent. The band also featured English, Scottish ( Roberston and Ure) and American musicians at different times as well as a chap from Belfast on and off. I'm sure I'm missing a Russian or Polish connection somewhere...
Phil was born in West Bromwich so this also makes him a YamYam, but he was christened down the road from me in Selly Oak so we could also claim him as an honorary Brummie...
good job he only asked the girls if they had any Irish in them  :)

If we’re going down the Jimmy Hand-Shandy route, then I’ll mention that ‘Donald Where’s Yer Troosers?’ bloke. Was it Andy Stewart? And somewhere from the cesspit of our cultural memory, do I recall some annoying little Scots kid doing a version of this on a BBC talent show or something?

My parents knew most of the band. I think I've met them all but thankfully I was too young to embarrass myself by fanboying over my parent's friends and acquaintances.

I remember when Andy Stewart had an afternoon TV show called Scotch Corner.

And let's not forget Kenneth McKellar.  I've just looked him up and he was about the same age as Andy Stewart, I thought he was a generation earlier.
