That's total crap. If he'd driven through an area in which there were marshals on the track at 180MPH then maybe .. but he didn't .. driving too slow. What a joke.
No, he was driving too fast.  “...the stewards have since ruled that Ricciardo did not slow down sufficiently enough when the red flags were enforced”.

A 3 place penalty suggests he wasn’t too far over though.
Ah I see .. I think because he slowed right down at the end his overall time was OK, just too fast to begin with. Fair enough.

  • Wowzer, stonking lap from Hamilton! Looked like it was gonna be really tight until that last lap.

Interesting to see Kimi beating Deb, doesn't happen often! If the Ferraris are as good on race pace as the predictions suggest, it could be a good fight at that front tomorrow.  :)

Yep, close up to the end and then... boom. Gone.  I thought they’d just goosed the engine, but Hamilton claims he was in the same mode as his first run.

I'm backing Vettel for the win ... Hamilton has had seven pole positions in Oz but only converted one for a win.

when the lead is won by an overtake in the pit lane under a virtual safety car, you kind of wonder what's the point.

We have seen this happen many, many times over the years, as no doubt you are aware.

The safety car often introduces a disadvantage to a driver who has painstakingly built up a lead only to see that lead eroded through no fault of his own.

Those are the rules I'm afraid.

Stopping diving into the pits during a safety car period to gain an advantage may help, but then there are so many different scenarios possible.that it becomes difficult to police.

How do you maintain the correct timed gap for the drivers following the lead car at the instance  a safety car incident occurs?

According to Toto Hamilton drove too slowly during the VSC.

Then why wasn’t Kimi on his gearbox then?

Looks to be another boring season... if the cars can’t overtake, what’s the point?!?

Albert Park has never had any overtaking. Bahrain might be better. Let's hope.

At least the midfield is looking good - Haas, McLaren & Renault should give us some great fights between them

Agreed, but all through the race it was apparent that following too Close was unsettling the car just like all of last year - look at Bottas uninspiring drive as an example. Him and Max.

Didn't SV just cane it into the pit lane entry once he'd crossed the white line (so off the main track), then slow down for the inner pit section then cane it again out of the pits, then match the VSC speed when joining the main track?  A loophole in the rules surely this time that was exploited well? (and many teams s/w models too)

Ask Toto ... he's changed his story slightly blaming a software glitch .. Vettel was only a second ahead when he left the pits.

Toto is blustering. Anyone paying attention from their sofa could see what happened, you simply lose less time putting under VSC. No glitches or conspiracies just a ticking clock.
