I never liked that colour on the 335.  When I first saw Dave Grohl play one I just thought "dude what are you thinking??".

If it's the same shade of blue as his signature Gibson version, then it's actually a hell of a lot nicer in person than in any of the photographs that I've seen of it.

Pelham Blue is a historically correct option for the Trini Lopez Standard model.

At the time that Grohl chose to highlight the TL model, it was not especially fashionable and, hence, more affordable than an ES-335 of the same production period.

Sadly still the same lumpy in the wrong places Epi 335 shape they use on all their semis.  :s
Bad angle on that first photo I think, looks better here…

For the prices Epiphone are starting to ask I’d expect nitro finishes rather than the cheap looking urethane they use.

I like everything about it except the headstock and the price.

But the pickups probably help make it worth considering.  Kinda like the Epi Casinos with proper Gibson dogears, which also fetch £1k+ prices.

I think Pelham Blue looks good, but I’d be fine putting those pickups in a standard color Epi 335 with a regular headstock for a lot less money.

Around the same time as it's revealed that for years Tiger Woods played with his old golf clubs but put Nike logos on them purely for endorsement purposes could it be the same sort of thing with endorsed musicians?

He probably isn't playing the Epiphone any time soon,  but he does play the Gibson versions at every show they do.     You can get one of those for £15k+

The Gibson version exists purely because of Dave's obsession with the Trini Lopez Models.  The vintage ones and Custom shop reissues are actually often cheaper than the DG-335's., but £5k is still the lower end for anything else that looks like this with a Gibson logo.

This leaves many without those budgets to go for a Chibson, then modding to suit.

There is a missing middle ground.  It will be interesting to see if the Epi fills it.  I'm just surprised it's taken this long.

My cousin plays in a FF tribute band and I know they will be all over this.  I helped him build a Shiflett style tele to avoid the £8k price tag of the model he wanted

He has played the Epiphone version live a couple of times.

Their latest performance at Austin City Limits he was using it.

  • The body looks the wrong shape to me. Too fat in places, particularly the horns/cutaways.

Maybe 30 years ago when Asian manufacturing was still getting to grips with things, Japan excluded, but nowadays I think that's utter nonsense. Look at the number of NGD threads on this forum alone praising the quality of affordable to mid-range guitars. If anything ever is wrong with them, it's rarely something that stops them being something you could rely on to gig with or something you wouldn't also find on an American-built guitar - the odd sharp fret end, cosmetic flaw, setup tweak, etc.

You get guys like Matt Heafy and Mark Holcomb who have fancier "parent brand" guitars, but don't like the risk of taking them out on tour when the Epiphone/PRS SE version is perfectly reliable. Touring musicians need tools, and the quality is now there for those to be suitable tools for the job.

The price will be on the high side for an Epiphone I’m sure, but as someone who has bought a 150th Sheraton, I’ve no regrets - it’s such a good guitar.

It’s a cut above the other recent Epiphones I’ve had (which were very good to be fair; Riviera, Les Paul Custom). The finish is better, the wood underneath looks really nice, the binding is not that weird semi-translucent apple pie looking goo, it’s proper binding.

Assuming this is the same, we already know it’s got Gibson pickups and CTS pots. My Sheraton got a Switchcraft switch and output, one-piece neck and hard case. We will see I guess…

I agree, but actually think the body shape is pretty close and it's the larger flakes in the metallic finish that catch the light differently and make it look pudgy

The horns aren't too bad, a little chubby, but my main problem is with the bottom, it is wierdly extended on all Epi semis. It should look like the left pic. You can see by how much body is below the output jack, about half an inch more than on Gibsons. If they fixed this, I'd probably buy one.

@davros you're right - I'd never noticed and now won't be able to unsee it!

Also, does the neck meet the body at a lower fret on the Epi version (19 vs 20)?

The neck joint depth has varied a lot with gibsons, the pic above has very little body the headstock side of the pickguard. The current 335s seem to have more body there implying a deeper neck set, very close to the epi in your pic.

Here's an overlay of 2 new ones, with the necks and bridges aligned.

Sorry you can't unsee it now. Bothered me on the Noel G sig too.
